Well, my wife killed her Mustang yesterday, so we're looking for a replacement. On the top of the list is a TDI Jetta, but in doing some research, it looks like everything after 04 has a freaking DPF. The '10 Jetta's are really nice, but like with the DMax, I REALLY don't want the DPF. Does anyone know anything about their reliability, and maybe a way to yank the stupid thing?

If the Jetta doesn't pan out, next on the list is pretty much anything GM (as far as I'm concerned) since I've got the tools to diagnose & fix just about anything that could go wrong with it.

Oh, BTW, Toyota's are JUNK! I still have NO clue how the TOY got so much damage so high up and far back with my Wife's mustang having so little visable damage. Considering that impact was almost definatley unde 35MPH, I would NOT want to be in one for a higer speed/direct frontal impact . Underneath, the PS crumple "joint" is partially collapsed, other than that, the bumper (not the cover, but the actual bumper underneath) appears to be virtually unscathed, near as I can tell without removing the cover, the core support is pushed back and over, so the entire front end is about 2-3" out of place. I'm fully expecting it to be written off with the front end being "tweaked" the way it is and the airbags deployed.

Hopefully everyone is ok

My wifes 09 jetta tdi has about 23k on it now. I've probably driven 10-20 percent of that (supervised). I have never seen a regen. At the 10 k service dealer said it had been thru at least one regen. Wife said she hasn't seen the regen light. So it must not regen for very long. I see the light go on when you start the car so I know the regen light works

for a daily driver, I wouldn't let the fact that the Jetta has a DPF be a turn off. Whats wrong with better emissions on a daily driver for the wife? Is she racing people on the street or something

It still gets pretty damn good mileage with the DPF.

or google supersprint ;) :D

Everyone was fine. Thing that ticks me off is the airbag deployment. There was NO reason for them to deploy. The impact simply wasn't severe enough. Heck, the only place it even touched her was her hand from where it was on the wheel. Fords are notorious for deploying when they where not needed.

The "better emissions" is a myth... there are at least several modded trucks here and on other forums that originally had EGR & DOC, that no longer have them and pass the sniffer with flying colors, so we know they do zip. As for the DPF, yeah, it may reduce soot (which is CARBON - the building block of life on this planet), but how about when they go into regen? That soot and extra fuel has to go SOMEWHERE. It doesn't just dissapear. I'm sure emissions go WAY up when they're in regen, they just won't tell you that. We all know the milage difference removing the DPF from many LMM's has made... As far as I'm concerned, the DPF is a "feelgood" POS that in the grand balance of things does nothing. The EPA is another one of the "Alphabet Soup" agencies that needs to go away.

And I'm not even close to sold on their reliability. They're expensive as crap to replace, so once it's out of warranty, guess who has to pay to replace the POS when it craps out?

I wasnt thinking clearly when I posted another the dpf as i agree dpf and cats are a way to make money IMO. Anyway yes, parts are expensive and leaving the dpf will keep the warranty in place but when buying a car like a VW or BMW you have to expect these costs. Comes with owning one. I for one like the jettas. They are not bad cars at all. I have a fee friends with one and they make nice daily drivers. I like BMW's too for other reasons. F the jap crap though

Wife has a 09 TDI with auto and only gets 35 miles a gallon. It runs and drives good and never seen the regen light come on. When warrenty goes out getting intake and exhaust on it.

Yes, they are very nice cars.

I did some reading... How about this: on the 2.0 & 3.0 TDI, you're supposed to check ash loading @ 120k; If it's still under 95%, then you're supposed to check it every 10k afterwards. Once it gets to 95%, you have to replace the stupid thing. So apparently, the soot never actually leaves the filter. It gets turned into ash (big improvement there ) If we do end up getting one, the DPF will stay as long as it's under warranty. Once warranty is gone, that crap is going to mysteriously fall off, assuming there's a way to "re-arrange the bits" and kill the DPF functions like in the LMM's.
