Long story short I managed to break the bearing(s) in the upper steering column. It looks like there are two (front and back side of housing) but can't seem to get good info from the parts diagrams I've found.

Am I out of luck trying to replace these bearings and need to get a new column assembly?

Not quite sure how to replace the second bearing. The upper, just below the turn signal cam plate, looks simple enough to get to.

Why do I keep doing this?

Maybe you have to disassemble from the top to get at the second one? Sounds like a heck of a lot of work. Might just be a better idea to go to the boneyard and pick up another column.

Yeah that was kind of along the lines that I was thinking. I'll see later today. Doesn't seem too bad as I do have it torn down the whole way basically now, really not that bad of a job.

You can go to GMPartsOutlet.net. From there, you can email the parts department with your VIN. They can download the GM Diagrams with the corresponding part numbers.
