Are upper oil pan leaks common on a duramax? From what I can tell my truck is leaking suddenly from right above the oil filter mount and all along the back side.

Thanks!

If it is leaking above your oil filter (and especially from the back), it probably isn't the oil pan. I've seen a leaking turbo oil drain drip down the back of the valley, which then typically can run down the driver's side of the block (there's a valley drain hole back there - see the attached photo).

The upper oil pan is physically lower than your oil filter, as shown in the last picture.

It is possible that the leak itself is from the oil filter housing or oil cooler. Is it possible to get some photos of the leak?

Ill take some pictures later, its hard to tell because its a slow leak but is all over the filter/oil cooler and seems to follow the block on the bottom side to the passenger side.

Ive always had oil oil the filter, but recently started to drip in about 5 spots. And i did have my turbo replaced so Im guessing that may be the cause but for the life of me I cant see it come down from the valley.

Had the same kind of leak with mine, turned out being the upper valve cover leaking and running down the back side. The wind blows it down the back and funnels the oil and collects on the filter. Mines an lbz though.

what these guys said.

if you have a oil leak I would suspect turbo drain if you said it was recently replaced. The first time I did mine I had to redo the drain gasket on the rear cover (under the up pipes).
Next I would look at valve cover, as mine leaked and dripped right onto the oil cooler- leaked in front and ran down the whole length of the engine to the back

its the oil drain from what I can tell. Oil in the valley, slow leak but messy.

Just do a new gasket when I pull it out? No silicone?

the drain is on the mid plate, the oil feed is in the valley. you sure its the drain?

the feed is a banjo bolt with sealing washers above and below the line, no sealant on that bad boy. the drain, i use just a dab of sealant on the gasket to hold it down and then bolt the pipe down on top of it. you dont really need sealant there either. just make sure you clean all the old gasket off before putting the new one on.

Ill have to look at it again running, it may be the feed line. Maybe a new banjo washer if so? Or it just wasnt tight enough.

Thanks for the input James.

if your in that deep to tighten it up, i would clean and replace the washers.
