hey guys, since the head gasket install i have had this ticking noise coming from the drivers side, sounds like it could be exhaust, but is much louder than any other exhaust leak i have ever heard. your only able to hear it from outside the driver door area, and that wheel well, not from the pass side, or the top of the engine. it gets noticeably worse as it the engine warms up. i looked from the bottom and from what you can see there i see no visible leaks, i.e. no carbon trails. if i broke a bellow would it be that loud?

i am pretty sure its not an exhaust leak. i looked everything over good and cant see anything. the only thing i can see is the 6 bolts that bolt the up pipes to the turbo. will check them today. in poking around yesterday i noticed i can here it from driver or passenger side, but only from the underside. i cant really hear it from the top of the engine. i am going to put it up in the air today and see if i cant figure it out. i have never seen a bearing go bad on one of these so i am leaning towards rocker adjustment since the heads are new.

On my 06lly - it blew a head gasket and had the dealer do the repair. Got it back and a week later developed a ticking sound (sounded like an exhaust leak). Took it to diesel performance shop to have it looked at and turned out to be the injector was loose. In trying to figure out which one it was - we found they were ALL loose. We "assumed" that the mechanic simply forgot to torque them down.

hmmm interesting bill. i will double check that for sure now.

bml2200, no not losing power or boost. in fact just the opposite. i am chasing a smoke problem. climbing an entrance ramp near me at 3/4 throttle will yield about 20-25lbs of boost and still smoke.

Well when I blew up the bellow on my up pipe, the truck smoked a lot and had no power. Months before it happened though, probably when it was only cracked, I noticed I was missing 3 or so pounds of boost at WOT.

i did some things at lunch, i used a stethoscope and found the ticking to be coming from the cylinder head area. if you put the tip on the injectors it was loudest, but resting it on the valve cover was almost equally noisy. i heard nothing from the oil pan area either upper or lower pans. i am leaning to doing a valve lash adjustment on it one of these days now. it was not this noticable with the old heads so i am thinking that maybe the machine work was just a bit different and we never did check the lash upon install.

Anytime you unbolt or loosen anything in the valvetrain on any engine, you need to re-check the lash. That's just how it is. Especially after an HG swap!!

stupidly being in a rush. after last night towing, i am thinking it may not be lash, but the injectors. if your cruising on the highway any throttle at all your here the knocking/ticking noise, if you let off the throttle to slow a bit it and let the inertia move the truck the noise goes away. (the DFCO tables in efi). as soon as you hit the throttle again it is right back. it is definately rpm related as it gets quicker as you go through the rpms, and it gets louder as the load goes up. iirc there is an injector balance test in the tech 2 where you can shut off individual injectors. i will try this and have my ears on the injectors to see if the noise goes away.

what would cause wicked noisey injectors? the balance rates are all good, well within spec.

Sounds just like mine (rpm related). Only difference in your description so far is that I didn't have the smoking issue. Good luck figuring it out man.
