Unknown Engine Sound WITH VIDEO!

Just a shot in the dark but how about an exhaust leak? I've had one on a small block that sounded like two hammers hitting together.
Thats more than valve train problems i think....have you drained the oil on a clean pan to check for metal??? or maybe cut the filter...i wouldnt pull the valve covers until i did that.
I have a bad feeling its more then valve tran also, the guy i bought my motor from,come to find out it droped a valve stuck it in the head and the piston and head were replaced and it also was not ballanced.
pulled passanger side valve cover. everything appears to be in spec. valve lash still good, pushrods still strait, now weird wear. switched injectors front to back(noise seemed to be more so to the rear of the block), old oil looked fine, no metal what so ever. I havent heard truck run yet but also havent heard from owner so assuming its still makes the same noise. think the game plan is drive it till something breaks... or sell it to me... lol.
wow, just listened to the video. IMO it sounds much worse in the video then in person. that video does make it sound more like a knock then top end. Anyone with known good LBZ injectors? has anyone ran LLY injectors on bosch ecm? I know the voltage is different, just wondering if anyone has ran it and what was the results?
Mine is making the same noise and im still using the same ecm and the same injectors from the old motor if that helps at all.
Open up the little window in the bellhousing and check for rotational play in the flexplate/converter with a screwdriver.
Which Converter is in the truck?
I have an ATS converter with a stock flywheel,i am not sure what this poster has.Seams to be louder on my passenger side and louder on his drivers side but i will try and check to see if any freeplay in the converter area.
Hey guys, thanks for all the advise. As Dallas S sayed we pulled valve covers and everything seems normal. No metal filings on magnetic oil plug. Cut oil filter open and it is clean. We have tried multiple tunes and no difference. There is a suncoast 1054 converter in there and it has no play. And no we did not line bore the block. So I will let you guys know if anything changes, until then I'm going to drive it like I stole it. lol

noise hasnt changed, truck still runs great. Im not sure of the milage but he daily drives it so theres gotta be a few thou by now.
Time and money is the reason for no machine work. dropped some good coin on this thing and just wanted it back together. next time it comes apart it will get the whole meal deal.
if this was a bearing/line hone issue, wouldnt the noise get worse over time? I see the truck weekly and it has yet to change.

Shot in the dark but could a piston be barely touching the oil squirter because they weren't aligned perfectly? Just an idea...

1st .... what head gaskets did you use and how high were the pistons out of the bore .
2nd .... I had an injector about a month ago that sounded like a hammer and a lower rate then your . Injectors can make alot of noise sometimes. Id get a stethescope with a long tip and start locating exactly where the noise is coming from . This should be easy with one of these . Get one from Harbor Freight or something . Best tool I use to locate noises and where they are generated from .
3rd .... Is it possible you have a tight valve . Not a loose one . Did you roll it through and recheck all your clearances . What did you adjust valves at . ?
Water pump ... just did one on mine . Was making clacking noise and weird as hell .. was missing 3 teeth on gear .
So many things it could be and guessing here is just a shot in the dark .
You need to identify where this is coming from . Get a stethescope and start going over the whole motor and find the noises general area . :thumb:
Converters can make noise ..... cracked flex can make noise .
The 1st thing I think sadly is you just rebuilt it and it makes noise . Fire alarm #1 . Sorry
Get the stethescope and go over each injector . Put the tip of the tool right on the top of the body . All will make noise , but you might hear one that sounds like a hammer . I thought I had a broken rocker or something a month back and it was an injector . Many others similar balance rates , but one was bad and noticable with stethescope .
