I have an LBZ that when looking up under the pistons with the oil pan off i can see rust colored rings about the size of a quarter above the wrist pins on the piston bottoms. Is this an indication of abuse that can lead to all the pistons failing?

Sound like burned oil from the squirter... Don't think it means to much, pretty common from what i have seen.

Thats what I would guess as well. Once conventional oil gets much beyond 325-350 degrees, it can flash burn and turn to a grey chalk like substance and cling. Sounds like what you've got.

Well thank you fellers.
Next hurdle is a piston looks damaged from under and has left some scuffing of what might be just piston I cant fully tell as it looks silvery and not deep into the bore.
I have to decide if I want to try and pull the head off see if I can hone it or do I want to sleeve it or return it for my money back.
Whats the going rate for 1 sleeve installed and honed?

A sleeve is around $200 if I recal from the last one we had done.

Details on the sleeve? How big did they bore? What material?

Just curious how it went. Our bigger diesel trucks are sleeved but I never thought about it for a dmax that's why I'm curious.

Depending on the brand of sleeve, most blocks can be repaired/upgraded with a dry sleeve and be stronger than stock. Dart sleeves are pretty common, but each shop probably has their favorite.
