I'm needing to replace my ball joints on my 05 4x4 . Question I have all the replacement parts I'm finding does not show for a 4x4 . Are the uca the same for a 2x4 and a 4x4 ? Should I replace the uca or just the ball joint ? Truck has 240k miles on it . Also how do I tell if my pitman arm and idler are are 3 spline or 4 spline with out removing them? Thanks

I'd replace the whole arm. There's not much of a difference in price for a ball joint or the complete arm with the joint already installed.

You should be able to slide the sleeve up on the arm back into the steering box and count the number of splines. I think you can also give your VIN to the dealership and they can look it up?

I would check the Raybestos Professional line of parts for the UCA's and lower ball joints.

Raybestos 502-1083 Professional Grade Control Arm and Ball Joint Assembly

Lower ball joint Raybestos 505-1363 Professional Grade Suspension Ball Joint

Upper ball joint Raybestos 500-1104 Professional Grade Suspension Ball Joint

Yea the upper control arm bolts are known to break. If they do napa sells a whole replacement bolt kit. I went with moog upper control arm and ball joint. Holding up so far

From another site on the Moog control arms...

Replaced the upper control arms with Moogs on my '04 3500. They seemed pretty cheaply made. The originals were fully boxed, the moogs just has the end's boxed and the middle just has the edge flared out. didn't come across to me as a 'this part is made to last' kind of thing.

My moog parts that I changed looked the same as what I pulled off, doesn't mean it wasn't changed in the past. They seem to hold up just fine with a lift and 35" tires.

Do not use ac delco uca. The ball joints are crap. At full drop out it will bind in the ball joint and not rest on the frame stop.

Raybestos uca look the same as acdelco also........

Moog makes a couple different options. One better than the other like a premium line
