Brand new to diesel, so any and all input is appreciated! Do I need to be adding a fuel additive every time I fill up? Is Diesel #2 the best thing to run? I read somewhere that if it is not Ultra Low in sulfur you shouldn't be running it. Is this true or am I okay running plain Diesel #2?

JK welcome to DuramaxDiesels! #2 diesel is whatcha want and additives give you extra lubricity which ULSD is lacking compared to the diesel we bought years ago. Power service "Diesel Kleen" is a good choice and sold at many retailers. It also will boost the Cetane rating. Use it as much as your wallet is comfortable with

Don't run #2 in your LML it's hard on the emissions equipment and can plug the DPF quicker... If you have issues and take it into the dealer and they find out you have been running an unapproved fuel, bye bye warranty.

I have heard great things about Optilube, I just wish someone carried it up here.

Welcome to Duramax Diesels.

welcome! Fill out your signature (year, mods, etc) so people can see what you are working with. I see the LML in the top, more info is always helpful for the guys on here.

If it is DPF equipped (LML that isn't deleted) you have to be careful with additives. If deleted, I would recommend running a .5-1oz 2 stroke oil per 1 gallon diesel. I run 1oz/gal in my truck. You can get 1gal jugs at Walmart for $13.

Number 1 isn't typically available during summer months....what else is he supposed to run? ULSD is #2

Oops :D I was thinking offroad... That seems to be what everyone up here wants to try and run.

#2 is ULSD so your good to go. I have no idea on additives for the LML though. Just that the optilube beat everything on the market a few years ago.

I think he is thinking of a fuel with a higher sulphur content... Even red fuel is still ULSD. We don't exactly have a choice anymore. It's ULSD #2 thus the need for additives.

That may be in the lower 48 but we still get the good stuff up here at the mine and it's not dyed...

Kind of off topic, but can you run heating fuel through an lml with deleted emissions and get away from the ULSD at the pump?

Not that i ever would do that, being illegal. :D

Whatever diesel is at the pump is safe.

Fyi the off road "red" fuel is the exact same as what you buy at the pump only difference is it has red dye and its not taxed so it still couldn't hurt the lml if it wanted to.

I wouldn't call Oregon southern but then again you are up there in the middle of nowhere :D

and the red fuel is illegal to run on the street anyway so why even risk it at all.

I misread the op's question thinking he was asking about offroad fuel... I retracted my statement about the #2 fuel thing. Auble asked me about a hypothetically if a LML had a dpf delete and offroad fuel just happened to get in the tank would it hurt it. I also stated that our offroad fuel is not dyed or the same as ULSD... We then had to make sure that the op realized that Auble and I are in Alaska and everything we were talking about didn't apply to him.

& yes you are way Southern;)

OP don't run offroad in your truck, everything else is good to go from the pump.

I think I covered the whole thread:)

I use Stanadyne, they are an OEM diesel injector manufacturer and also the only GM approved additive as far as I'm aware. I run their Performance product with has some lube and demulsifier and increases cetane. I also the Lubricity formula for extra lube on standard ULSD pump fuel. Their products are DPF/DEF safe as well.
