LLY: Turbo Self Test Interval?

What makes the ECM determine if it wants to test the turbo vanes or not? Does it test periodically or randomly?

I was driving to work today (About 5-10 miles) and it seemed like every time I was at a red light or stop sign, I could hear my vanes being tested or at least I could hear the change in tone from my passenger side floor board (either the vanes were being tested or my exhaust is loose on my downpipe )

Anyways, I stopped at the store, when I turned my truck on, the vanes tested themselves again. Got to work, shut off my truck and turned it back on, after about a minute the vanes tested again. Except no codes on my CTS monitor.

I dont currently have a V2 nearby to manually test the vanes

The vane sweep is run quite regularly. It doesn't mean anything is wrong, it is a normal thing. The ECU sweeps the vanes partially as a test, but mainly to keep soot from accumulating and sticking the vanes.

Interesting. I was just concerned because it seemed so frequent this morning....or at least I only just noticed it so often

Is this vane position normal at idle? Sometimes it will be around this and sometimes it will be at 10-20% (which is what I've heard is normal at idle)

On a tune with a rumble idle mine sits at 57-58%. Stock idle is 87-88%

My turbo has been acting up so not sure if it's a good comparison

I'm assuming its due to Rob's tuning, but I havent reached out to ATP yet.

Mine were set at 10%. Now I'm running Marks tuning so idk what they are set at.

I would assume Rob set you up with the LB7 idle.... in my experience the LLY's seem to do it the most for some reason when the LB7 idle is set up. My buddy had one and it seemed to do it at every stop light.

I vaguely recall Monte from ATP mentioning the LB7 idle, thats probably it.


I just get paranoid sometimes and am always looking for something that may be wrong lol

I switched to a full 4 inch exhaust w/muffler vs a straight piped 5 inch exhaust, so maybe thats why I hear it more often now
