LBZ: Tuning out the MAF

GMC_2002_Dmax

The Still Master
Proper tuning always centers around information.. why would delete one of the major sensors for how much actual air your engine is using? We don't have wide-band O2 sensors like gassers that you can judge effective tuning with! Or are you going by EGTs and Smoke?

Wide Band can be interfaced with EFI-Live.......;)

Removing the MAF sensor is not necessary nor is it desirable IMHO, it is a limiting sensor the engine uses to calculate mm3 in relation to lbs/min of airflow into the engine.

It is a critical sensor and when setup properly will allow more throttle response/turbo response than a truck without a MAF sensor.

But that is only my opinion.

:D

I agree with Tony/Dustin that a guy who know's how to tune with a maf it will be more driver friendly. I wasn't worried about drivability but after doing it that way it was pretty simple to drive. I like to be in control of the fuel with my foot. I also think(know) it helps with nitrous(without) but I won't go into that here. Jeff

Most of the tunes for my truck have the MAF disabled so that I have complete control with my foot - most of my customers' tunes have the MAF enabled to make the truck more streetable for people without the ability to properly use the pedal.

I liked having mine maxed might go to it again but I have fuel coming on pretty quick already might try maxing it again but kinda need a cp3 first can't hold rail still :(

While I agree that those of us that know how to operate the go pedal don't necessarily need the maf sensor in place or functional, I don't think that any single one of us will ever be able to apply the finite control with our right foot that the ECM can using the maf sensor. A person simply can't react and make adjustments as fast as the ECM can, therefore I believe that a properly tuned maf equipt truck will always run better/faster IMO.

Remember when you made a comment after a race about how you were suprised that my S480 woke up quicker than your 364? ;)

MAF my friend, properly set up MAF. :thumb:

It takes some time, alot of logging, and a fair bit of frustration but in the end it can and does make a turbo that big quite acceptably streetable.

Whoa, whoa, whoa - big single turbos are not at all acceptable on the street. We all know the only way to have a streetable truck with over 700 rwhp is to install multiple turbos and powder coated tubing all over the place.......:baby::angel:

If thats a shot at me I am right here say whats on your mind , I have never stated they don't belong on the street I just done recommend them as "towing" suitable. We have allowed alot of posts here to stay lately Dustin that involve you posting to get business that would normally be deleted along with a friendly PM, mostly because you are a very smart guy , and we appreciate and respect your knowledge and you cab be a great source of help to members here, and your posts are positive in nature geared towards helping, start causing drama and see how fast that can change ;)

It wasn't a shot at you at all Trent, I have never had a problem with you and admire your work. It was a simple joke with a fellow big single owner who refered to an S480 as streetable. I'm glad you can see that I am just trying to help people.

While I don't have a dog in the fight I think that a properly setup big single (3.0+) can be fun on the street. My switch to a very small single came because I didn't have the proper setup and was quite unhappy with my 3.0 charger. I think people see singles as less streetable because twins don't require as specific of a setup to spool quick and have great street manners. Either way both have their merits and having tried the big single route if i had the money I'd like to give twins a shot or a properly setup big single a shot
