I have a buddy that wants me to huck a tune into his LBZ/ZF6. Is there anything you do different between tuning a ZF6 as opposed to an ally? I’ve never tuned a ZF6 before and wanted to check it out before I dive into it.

I only had my LB7/ZF6 a short period of time, but @DAVe3283 was able to get his normal tune up and running on the truck and it ripped. Felt like a different animal compared to the same tune in my Allison LB7.

The only issue I recall was a TCM communication error code, which I didn’t own the truck long enough to sort out with Dave.

All red Dale .

Shouldn’t be any differences. Certainly don’t have the defuel issues you normally need to worry about

Alright then.
I’ve been told they de-tune these compared to ally trans trucks but I’ve never looked at the tuning to compare. Guess I’ll find out. Thanks y’all.

They do but it’s just with more limiters like they do with the medium duty trucks

I see. So if I script my tune into it then all those limiters should be gone and the truck should wail. Either way it’s gotta be better than the Bully Dog in it now.

I’ll say if it’s a stock clutch it won’t last long. Even my single disc upgrade wouldn’t hold any power.

dual disc and big tuna was fun in that truck.

Clutch upgrades will be a must. With a standard tranny the only thing I can see that I would do differently would be first see how the truck responded to my normal tuning and adjust torque and throttle injection accordingly for acceptable driving conditions. You can make them too responsive and wouldn’t be much fun to drive.

It has a southbend in it I’ve been told. No lift pump either so rail pressure will likely fall off before the clutch slips. His biggest complaint right now is that it’s a turd under 2500 rpm so I’ll see what happens with my basic tune and go from there.

Thats the life of a manual not having the torque multiplication of a converter.
