Mike,

I asked this over at the Place and got no response. Hoping you can shed some light on this.

One of our mechanics told me about an email he received. His Automotive Supervisor says that if the shop finds that an Allison is "acting up" due to screwed up TCM programming, it can be cleared by doing the following:

1) Shut truck off while transmission is in Neutral
2) After 30 second wait, restart truck with transmission in Neutral.

I guess this is supposed to clear any codes and/or set the TCM into relearn or back to its original configuration. Thats the gist I got from what the mechanic was telling me.

Supposedly, this was told to management by an Allison engineer during a UPS Automotive seminar recently.

Is this true or not?

It could be my imagination, but I actually shut my truck off in Neutral once in a drive through and restarted it after finally gettin my order right prolly more than 30 sec. When I pulled onto the highway the thing was shifting terrible hard.

I noticed that also one day when I shut it off in nuetral and then started it. Got onto the highway and limped it due to a lazy shift. After gunning it. 1-2 shift? never has limped again.

Interesting. Casper is often shut off in neutral, and I haven't noticed anything. It would be easy to tell. Use EFILive to record the TAPS information after driving around alot. Now do the neutral trick, and collect it again.

I have no idea if its valid or not. I told my mechanic that Id ask around. You'd be amazed at how little they know about these new trucks' drivetrains.

I do it (shutoff and restart in neurtal) EVERYTIME I go through a drive through... I'd imagine at least 50% of the time it's off for more than 30 sec. before restarting. Interesting. I've never really thought mine shifts real good - kinda lazy shifts IMO. Maybe this has something to do with it??? Bout the time it starts shifting better (learning), it gets reset. Hmm. As they say on Myth Busters, plausible?

Thanks Mike. He did also mention it dealt with the 6-spd Alli (thats whats behind the 6.7 Cummins I drive), and Im not schooled enough to know if the 5-spd would act the same way.

How did you get an alli behind your 6.7?? You install it yourself?

UPS truck/van. :hello:

If they (common dodge truck folk) know the 6-spd alli is behind their beloved cummins in some factory application, surely that would make it a MUCH easier swap for them wanting to do it?

Wait, are you saying this resets the TAPS or just sets the tranny to relearn?

I'm interested to see the results from someone who can log it

here is where the problem is...

The cummins ISB's have their own unique cummins ECM that actually drives the engine. Then the dodge trucks have a "PCM" that does two things. Controls the transmission, and acts as a gateway/translator between the Cummins ECM and the dodge body computers. (Its not like our trucks where the ECM can talk to the body directly)

So...in the dodge truck apps, the cummins ECM is programmed to talk only to a Dodge truck PCM; to send instrument cluster info, data, security info, etc... Its not programmed to talk to a medium duty Allison TCM.

Now of course you could swap the cummins ECM to one from a medium duty app and then it would talk directly to the Allison TCM.........BUT it would leave the dodge PCM (gateway) hanging, so none of your gauges, etc would work.

Kinda makes things a lot more confusing even tho it seems like a simple problem to work around... :(

Ben, the truck itself is a Freightliner, not a Dodge. Though the 6.7 in it is a detuned version of the same motor in the Ram pickups.

Sorry to those who thought I became a sheeple....its my UPS truck.

no no, I know. But Mitch was saying "so if it works so well and easily in a factory app why cant they [take all the allison computer components and wiring] and stick it in a dodge pickup"...and I explained why that would not work, because the computers in the medium duty and dodge applications are programmed differently to talk to different TCM's. :)

A good friend of mine has a new blue tech 6.7 and has a 6 speed ally in it. He said that you can order them for dealer like that.
