Rob uses a special tcm for drag racing on his LBZ and I will on the 06 as well. Quick change, all ready to go, don't have to mess with tow haul. Use it just for drag racing.
so they pull up to the sled, back up, get out change ecm, then pull???

...they already do...its called tow/haul...
I see so many people complaining "why dont we have dsp2 for the TCM" when its sitting staring them right in the face...
I understand, I didnt know the truck had an issue, I thought someone couldnt tune an tcm correctly and caused reverse issues, and instead of fixing it, they'd rather switch it out on the trackI think you meant TCM. And no, I've never seen anyone else do this before but like I said, he's trying to figure it out and in the mean time, this is the only way he has reverse to back up to the sled. To unhook him, the sled has to pull forward to take slack out of the chain. Then he pulls off, throws the other TCM back on that has reverse and carries on like normal.
The TCM that reverse doesn't work in was tuned by a shop and works extremely well. Much better than we could ever get it to work. I'm not real sure about where the spare TCM came from but they want to keep it stock so they haven't buggered it up. So until they can get another TCM that works completely correct in reverse and shifts as nice as the one he has, this is how he'll be doing his thang.
It doesn't really waste that much time. Especially if someone else pops the hood, pulls the TCM and the driver just stays in the truck which is how it goes down and why the O.P. mentioned seeing a guy carrying the TCM (that he thought was the ECM).

We had 2 TCM's for both Blue and Casper before, this is how I fried one, when I swapped, and a plastic protector fell off.
Second TCM was out of an H1 Dmax Hummer IIRC, we also experimented with Kodiak TCM's as well.
