Transplant '03 engine to a '01 truck

Hi All,

I purchased a new (to me) '03 running LB7 engine to put into my '01 truck. I've been researching but didn't find many answers to the differences between LB7 production years.

I read somewhere about the '03 had a new data bus system, and some of the sensors reported to the bus rather than directly to the gauge. Oil pressure I know for sure, but the others are a mystery. I'm guessing the FICM is on that list as well.

What are the sensors/electronics that I need to use that are '01 specific?

Any other differences I should know about while I have both engines sitting side by side?

Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

I would only use the 03 longblock. Use the 01 sensors/intake/etc off your old engine.

Thanks, the forum move makes sense.

The '01 block is bad, I should have mentioned that in the original post.

What about the wiring harness? Would it be ok to use the '03, or do I need to use the '01 as well?

Like Tom said just use the long block (bottom end and heads) and put everything else from your 01 back. If I’m not mistaken there’s a big difference in the 01-02 and 03-04 as far as controlling everything. That and your 01 I believe has a little bit different piping setup on it.

Like I said, just use the 03 longblock.

Use the 01 intake (because of the location of the MAP sensor and it is a different design than the 03) and use the 01 sensors and wiring harness for everything else in their regular locations.

The oil pressure sender is in a different location on the 01 than the 02-up, so Im not sure if the boss is still there on the 03 longblock. If its not, then you may have to put the 01 sensor in the 03 spot and lengthen those wires. No big deal.

Got the old motor out, and am working though getting things swapped over to the new one. What about the injection pump?
