I know an alli isnt like rebuilding a lego house but what are descent kits. Sun Coast is the most common Ive heard. My LMM is my daily driver and so I need something that has longevity but can handle mild abuse and a hot tune. Im getting dyslexic from researching kits. I wanna see who has built 1000's and how well they are holding up and their mileage.

Buy a Suncoast kit from ATP.

I know people pay their bills building transmissions but if I got a manual and took my sweet time does the average joe have a chance at building something reliable. I know allisons require specialty tools which isnt a huge deal but its something i want to learn how to do. thoughts?

There are plenty of average joes that have had success rebuilding their transmission. And some that have not. Attention to detail.

Mike is correct listen to him on buying a sun coast kit. The raybestos kits are very nice.

I wish I could hang out with one of those guys for a day and pick up a few tricks and tips from them.

I have built a handful now with success. I had a lot of help in the beginning from Evan help fix a previous built trans so I learned off That. I recommend buying a kit from a vendor on here such as Evan. The tech support is there. Mike L is also a great help and very straight forward and to the point.

I have built a dozen of them so far. I too had problems in the beginning and had a trans in and out of the rig 3 times before I got it right. Good thing it was my own lol! If one learns the right way to do it and pays real close attention to detail and clearances everything out it will pay off! I typically assemble and disassemble one 3 or 4 times until I am happy with clearances and everything. I am by no means as quick or ever will be as Mike L and Evan. I take my sweet ass time lol!

I've built mine and two others now, all with different kits. One truck with the gmax kit got sold a year later so idk how its doing now...

I learned allisons in school, and this ended up being the fastest and easiest way but too expensive

I have a genuine Allison manual that I use, and there's a ton of info there that isn't in the atsg books. I went cheap on my build, but I never plan on building a motor, and it'll blow before the trans does. Having a lathe/mill near by is handy as you will very likely need to shave the backplates to get clearances.

IMHO, the average "good" mechanic can tackle an Allison rebuild and install a kit and set clearances. This is not a "build" like Mike or Evan would set up, that takes a lot of trial/error and a deep understanding of how the systems work together and what you're trying to accomplish.
