ok so i asked this else where but got no answer so... I was thinking that we put 10-30 synthiec in the transfer case because of evap/vaperization why dont we also put it in the trans cuse doesnt it make sense that the trans runs hotter than the transfer case???

ya from what I found. 3qrts and fill through the speed sensor hole transfer only calls for 2qrts but they say to put in 3 mine has been fine so far it actually stopted the 4x4 shifter from rattling

Bump what does the zf6 call for. I can't find where I had it wrote down. Something keeps telling me it's ATF fluid but just want to make sure.

i'm betting its Castrol syncromesh like the NV4500, but ATF and Gear lubes were all used on the NV4500 with no ill effects. I ran my ol' 96 3/4ton 4x4 chevy with mobil 1 gear lube in the trans for many years, syncros hooked up beautifully and never had a failure. I would like to say that the ATF I ran in the beginning seemed to shift a little better when out playing around but I ran the gear oil because of the heavy loads and poor maintenance schedule (used on a farm).

ZF calls for Castrol Transynd (synthetic ATF). Manual shift transfer case also calls for ATF. I use the Transynd in both.
