Transfer case rear half

Transfer case has been slinging fluid for as long as I can remember. Installed a new seal last year and it did not fix the leak so I figured the slip yoke bushing has worn beyond allowable limits. There is, in my opinion, to much play in the slip yoke when you push up on it.

Recently I have developed a vibration at 128+ mph that I am sure if I stayed in the throttle long enough, I'd be picking up broken piece of transmission and transfer case. It does it in 4wd as well as 2wd, right at the 128 mph mark.

Has a brand new Page drive shaft heavy wall rear drive shaft and all new spicer non greasable u-joints. Vibration is there with the stock rear shaft as well as the new shaft so that is not the culprit.

I am hoping that rear bushing has worn enough that it is causing the drive shaft to bounce around.

I just purchased a brand new aluminum rear case half for the transfer case. Hoping to kill 2 birds with 1 stone. Fix the leak as well as the vibration.

Has anyone experienced a vibration like I am describing from a worn slip yoke bushing? Vibration is not at all noticable normal driving, but hit 128+ mph and....yea.

I dunno Mike, this is a tough one... I think you should ask a service tech from GM to do a ride along and get his opinion

Actually, I have a similar, but far more pronounced issue with my truck right now...turns out it was the front diff. I haven't looked at a schematic to see how its put together, but it would seem as though a king/keeper nut didn't get pinned or torqued or set right when I had the gears swapped and the stub shaft coming out of the diff is loose, like an outer bearing. Since this has been happening since day one of the swap I can only "assume" the diff wasn't assembled correctly

I've been trying to trace it since the swap, I knew it was the diff but couldn't "prove it" the day I picked it up I didn't get a mike away before I came back and said "WTF?"

I experienced a vibration between 47-53 mph, tho over time the window has changed some and the noise and vibrations have become much worse. I had new Ujoints installed with the swap, I tried swapping the ft 4x4 shaft, I changed fluids...basically everything was or recently had been freshly rebuilt under my rig and I had to wait it out for the issue to become more evident to me.

The shop that performed the work had me runnin in circles with excuses like breaking the gears in, it was the tires or alignment...which I jumped thru their hoops of elimination...And of course when it came down to them our schedules didn't coincide to look at it...for 6-8wks...then my engine blew up and it sat thru their warranty period...

Sad that it took me over 15k miles to figure it out
:roflmao:

Good luck with your issue Mike

I am confident it is not the front diff or any of the front end components because I can reproduce the vibration even with the truck on the dyno. I've been needing the new case half for awhile so I figured that would be a good place to start.

Hoping either that the rear bushing is gone or the output shaft bearing bore has been ever so slightly walloed out.

They said guaranteed delivery within 3 business days so hopefully friday I'll have the new case half and maybe can jump on industrial injections dyno and test it out. I'll have to mount my backup camera under the truck so I can watch the transfer case and see if it is vibrating while running it. Hard to watch that on the street at 130mph.

Only time I had a vibration problem was after getting my shaft back from the driveshaft balance place. I think they balanced it within "factory tolerances" as it would only start vibrating above 95mph. Called the driveshaft place and mentioned a 130mph requirement. After a moderate pause on the phone they said to bring it back to be rebalanced. Good as new now! :thumb:

If these new parts don't change anything, then I'll look into have the shaft balanced better.

AH-HA
I see. Well hopefully the case half does the trick for ya...@ 130mph....

Thiiiis guy, eh...
"Ahh, hey guys. I have a slight vibration I'm concerned about, can you help me out? So it occurs @130mph...."

Yeah Mike...what youre feeling is the laws of physics breaking down and the fabric of nature ripping apart as you harness the power required to do the things you're doing, with a heavy azz truck that was NEVER meant to do it

Mine slung fluid when I got it and 20k ago I grenaded the tcase and I replaced with a new gm unit (reman?). Either way, it still slung fluid immediately after the new case. I didn't change anything on the driveshaft end though and I think that is why it does it.
Fortunetly the front different leaks worse so I don't worry about either lol.

Probably the cap at the end of the yolk, easy fix clean it real good with either and then fill the void behind the cap with a good coat of silicon...

Got the new parts today.

The old case main snap ring grove measured .137".
The new case main snap ring groove measures .118".

Almost .020" of wear/play. The snap ring itself looks good. I can see where it has had some friction between it and the case but the wear on the snap ring isn't measurable.

Surprisingly this transfer case hasn't had a pump rub kit installed. There is almost no wear as well. Lucky me i guess.

The snap rings generally get a little tweeked when removed and re installed. The best way to go is install new ones. Then you arent second guessing yourself over an inexpensive part. Hope it cures you vibratory issues.
