so i finally got my trans back together, while it was apart i changed some pressure mods from a shim to the ats spring and valve. now this trans whines anytime the pressure gets over a certain pressure, at that time the gauge needle gets erratic. at idle to about 1200 rpm all is normal. does anyone have experience with this and how to resolve the issue? i need the pressure but it sounds like a supercharger at 1600rpm....

Im just not sure if it's the valve or just the high pressure? any thoughts?

I would look at the sump filter first. Watch your trans temps and see how high they go. I am not a fan of the ATS valve and spring combo.

surely the filter is in because i did check the pressure, i would assume if it was just sucking air it would do it all the time? or am i wrong thinking this?

Pressure does not cause a whine. Loss of pressure does. Start from the source and follow the trail.

I'd sacrafice a filter and cut it open first. If you insist on running their setup I would open up the ballance hole to .047. What kind of pressure did you see?

300 psi, the pressure mods were the only changes from the last time. Mainline psi went from 240 max to 300 with the ats parts.

Honestly I just want good pressure to keep the trans alive, I don't really care what parts I use to get there. Fwiw

Is there any way to test for a leak from the filter port to the pump? If there is a leak it would have to be in the pump halves or the separator plate

Are you running a stock converter flow valve?
The fluctuation you see in your gauge could be from not having a liquid filled head. If you had a leak somewhere you should see a slow pressure rise. Damaged bell housing gasket can cause a whine. Plugged or callapsed or cracked sump filter will cause a whine.
Don't know how far you tore down trans but if one of the clutches did not spline on to a ring gear, it will spin off track and cause a whine.

i have the pump all torn apart at this point, the internal filter looks fine, anything under 300 psi there is no noise its just when it reaches 300 it makes the needle jump and the noise starts.

the gaskets were new and they look fine dont see anything out of the ordinary, the valve is a modded stocker

If you are using the ATS pressure regulator hollow valve; it is already modified to not drop pressure. I don't know what would happen with a modified flow valve in conjunction with modded PR valve. I would certainly find a stock flow valve and replace the modded valve.

I started another thread but it was the internal filter, with the high line pressure and the filter not having a bypass it caused the whine. New filter all seems ok.

Thanks again Mike!!!!

SPX used to be the standard of all filters. Now they are made in china. They still work ok. The black plastic filters are the biggest hunk of shit ever made. Do not use them.
