So, have had this plan in the back of my head for a while.
We've got an old '55 four door Chevy that's been in the family essentially since new. My old man even drove it in high school. It's sat for a while, but it's in good shape with a nice original patina.
I had always planned on picking up an 06-07 van and building the 4l85e and swapping it in, as the 85 wouldn't require any trans tunnel mods and would be more than adequate. As well as being lighter and less parasitic loss than the Allison.
I've wanted to build this car for my dad as he's always had the go fast bug, loves to be a little different, and loves road trips. Figured I would go full creature comforts for his long road trips.
Well, I ended up picking up a truck with an LBZ for a deal I couldn't pass up; truck was a 3/4 roll and aside from body, everything is great shape.
On top of that, my dad mentioned if I ever do it, that pulling a small trailer so he could hop on his cruiser while my mom takes the car would be pretty neat too.
Now I'm starting to wonder if I just swap the Allison to 2wd and cut the tunnel, deal with the extra weight/drag, and know that it's strong enough for anything thrown at it, as well as being able to run a dsp5. Rather than going through the hassle of repinning the harness for the 85 (which won't be a big deal with everything else going on for the harness), along with wondering if it will be stout enough for continued use.
So, allison, 85, or something else all together?
