I have a 03 3500 mason dump with duamax Alison trans. the transfer case cracked and i lost all the fluid. the truck is slipping now in first gear. the engine is stock and so was the trans, the truck has 49,800 miles on it. I got a price of $5000 to put in a new trans. is there a better option?

Wonder if he means the extension housing and thinks it's the trans case itself? I'm guessing he fried his trans when it leaked all the fluid like mine did the first time the ext housing cracked.

I was told if they replace the tranfer case and it still slips they are going to have to replace the whole trans. The trans guy i used for the last 30 year retired last year the place i took it too seam like they are just parts replacers. The trans let go when i was doing 80.
yep, that's the extension housing/adapter that mounts the transfer case to the allison. They have been known to crack from time to time. The first time mine did, I think it was because of a bad ujoint. Second time, not so sure.
If you ran the fluid out until it wouldn't move or not move very well, yep, you've likely fried it. HOWEVER, explain what you mean when you say "need a new transmission"??? It should just need a rebuild and for the kind of money they are talking, you can get a FULL built trans. shipped to you and installed for same money or a little lower level trans. built for a bit less.

If you haven't already purchased that... might I suggest you send a member on here by the name of Big Dipper a PM. He's up your way and is one of the premier allison builders in your area. You can get a built trans with a warranty for that kind of money. Hate to see you just get a stock one for the same money as a new one. Heck, at the most it just needs a new tailhousing (~$550 NEW) and if stock is all you need, a rebuild kit can't be more than a $1000-1500 I wouldn't imagine. I feel like you are getting CONNED into buying something that isn't necessary. There is now way you need a complete new transmission. Yours can likely be rebuilt and replace tail extension.

Jeez im in CT, ill rebuild it for a helluva lot cheaper than that!
A stock allison rebuild kit is like 200 bucks. Extension housing new is 500-ish I think???
