I traded a 2004 YFZ 450 (quad) for a 2005 yz450f (dirtbike). Traded a dude straight up. This thing is huge, I'm 6ft and I'm still on my tippy toes:spit:

Anybody out there have one, any tips or things I should know?

Theres not a whole lot to know about them, other then keep the air filter clean (Important!!) And secondly try and keep up with the oil and filter changes. I have had more 426 and 450 yamaha's then I can remember with only one major engine failure. It was a 03 450 with about 5hrs on it, after about 20 attempts at this hill climb without success I decided instead of taking the long way back around to the trail, I was just going to cross the creek at the base of the hill. Well it was winter and the creek was about 3' higher then usuall, anyways long story short, I did not make it across and with the motor being extremly hot from the hill climb and then hydro-locking instantly in near freezing water, turned out to be a bad combination. Blow 3 holes through the motor, Both side cases and the center case:mad: To make it worse it was the first year for the WR-450 and yamaha released the bike before they had replacement engine parts available. The dealer had my brand new bike for 6 months before I got it back.

This is the 03 I blew up-

you got the short end of the deal, usually quads cost more than dirtbikes

I had a 03'. The motor was awesome, suspension sucked. Installed ohlins ti nitred forks and rear shock, valved for 185 intermediate (moto) oh my was that suspension nice. The suspension on your 05' is very good stuff for factory.

As stated above the yami is almost bullet proof. Change the oil regular & keep your air filter clean. Check the valves once a year, mine never needed adjusted even after 3 years of racing it.

What kind of riding are going to do with it?

Mostly hill climbing and messing around in the woods.

Don't know how serious you are, but suspension mods top my list on all my bikes. Your bike is factory valved for moto & a 165-175 pound rider, it might feel a little stiff & harsh for woods or soft if your closer to 200 pounds.

I'm 170. It doesnt set down much at all with me on it. I can only touch with one leg flat footed. It scares me cause I'm not a good rider and I don't want to stall out on a hill and then be F'd cause I cant touch the ground good with both feet.

You think I should address the suspension?

Maybe not, I would ride it and get comfortable with it first. Don't climb anything your not totally comfortable with. Your in the the target weight range for that suspension, but it is set up for moto not the woods. Like I said above it may feel a little harsh, maybe not. The kayaba forks are copies of showa's stuff which are very plush. I raced moto, so I dealt with harsher suspension when I rode it in the mountains or anywhere other than a track.

neither! He made it seem that somehow he got a deal on it since the gentlman traded him "straight up". Anyways mike, merry christmas to you

My bike may have been worth 100-300 bucks more. Big deal. I wanted the dirtbike so I traded him. Don't know how I made it sound like a good deal?? I was just seeing how many bike riders we have here.

Sounds like a good idea to me. I will just play with it when my leg gets better. I'm just excited to have a bike now:happy2: been wanting one for a couple years and this way it didn't cost me anything out of pocket.

X2^^ My 07's stock suspension was way to soft for me at 178lb's. I think for 80% of the people in our weight range, that intend on riding trails only, it will be fine with the factory set up suspension. Pro circuit did the update on mine, set up now for 180lb aggresive rider. Post up a pic when you get a chance.

you could take some of the preload out of the rear shock to allow it to sag a little more. at six foot i don't think you shoud have that much trouble touching the ground. i'm only 5' 9" and haven't had any trouble on the yzf450s that i have rode.

I can't believe I can't find any pictures of my 450, I got one of my friend's 03'. We built it in my garage about 4 years ago. It is pretty sweet, full Enzo 04' suspension, Yosh pipe, Hurricane kit. I know I have some around, I'll have to hunt for them. The old computer crashed and had my moto pics on there.
