Weld the the thing together during the rebuild. A/B/C pillars, door bars, etc. welded to the frame.:thumb:

oh yeah I know that; the cage in there was nowhere near a legit cage. It was basically sold as a "show" cage meant to be bolted into a stock VW. I did brace it a little bit with two cross pieces but thats about it. The fact that it held up as well as it did in a vehicle over twice as heavy (as a stock VW) in a very severe/violent rollover accident blows my mind.

the next cage will be "real". Heepjeep and I are making the new cage out of .120" DOM, notched properly, custom bent by us, welded in, and designed like a proper cage.

Glad you are ok, not to pick but you are actually supposed to let go of the wheel and pull your hands to your body to keep from breaking your wrists on the steering wheel. Reguardless the car can be replaced and you made it out ok.

why? It has a collapsable column, and I was tightly strapped in with a 4-point harness. How the hell is the steering wheel going to break my wrists in a rollover-type accident.

If your hands somehow get inside the wheel and the tire impacts something that causes it to spin around suddenly?

When I was in the AF and they were training us on the 2.5 ton trucks, we were told to keep your thumbs out of the steering wheel because when you are driving off pavement, if you hit a hole, the wheel will spin around suddenly and very quickly and the spokes will break them (your thumbs). You would be surprised how fast that wheel can spin.

Other than that, I have no idea.

How will it not?

Its not 100% certain that gripping the wheel will hurt you... But your not gonna be 100% safe wearing a seat belt either, less chanse of things to go wrong is always better.

Thats like saying how the hell will keeping your fingers inside a car keep you from gettting them cut off? Because one of my close friends got 3 fingers cut off in a roll over accident about 5 months ago and yeah they were inside the car. Why argue over that??

Oh I know; coming down rock piles and having a tire roll off a rock and into a crevace it will spin the wheel around. I never hold my thumbs in the wheel.

Thats what I was talking about, if you have your thumbs in the wheel, and when you land the tires turn the wheel your wrist will be done. Personally I was taught to let go of the wheel in a bad wreck and although Ive never personally been hurt in a wreck I have seen two fellow racers break thier wrists like this.

Thats how the hell it could hurt you lol :happy2:

Sorry to hear about that.:(

Glad both of you are OK.:thumb:

If the time for steering is over, and you have a shoulder harness, cross-your-heart by grabbing the opposite shoulder straps. This makes it very hard for g-forces to pull your arms out the window, and gives your rib cage more armor if the front end folds. It also makes it hard for the shoulder straps to slide off your shoulder.

Exactly! My friends are all heavy into sandrails (to expensive for blood) and thats what they always told me if you wreck, driving or a passenger, cross your arms in front of your chest holding opposite straps keep your chin pinned to your collar bone and lastly, tongue in your mouth:).

That's assuming you have time to react.... but good advice.
