torque converter question

Hi guys/gals -

My truck has developed a leak where the trans/engine mate. I am under warranty and I plan on having my local stealer replace the seal. Anticipating him being an agreeable guy, I am thinking it would be an opportunity to hand him a replacement converter to swap in for free, since he's got to get in there anyway.

That said, what converter should I get? I have EFI Live with my max tune pulling 2925us. I'm running a Transgo Jr. since the truck was new, along with Transynd and regular filter changes. I'm rough on her, but always easy in 5th and 6th, and have never limped the trans. I'm just over 40K right now. I do notice that under decent throttle in top gear on the highway I do get some chuggling from the converter, but that's been since pretty much new.

I'd like something that will let me keep my teeth when it shifts/locks up, but will flare less and help the overall package last longer. I also plan on hitting up Big Dipper for a rebuild that will handle anything a stock bottom end can handle - ONLY after this trans is shot. So the converter should be a good match for that too if possible.

Why haven't you called George and ask him since you are having him do the eventual buil?

unfortuneately, I doubt your dealer will install an aftermarket converter being as this does not fall or would be covered under warranty! However, you might want to remove the EFI as GM can void warranty if they find changes to the ecm. Have them change the trans input seal and replace the converter yourself later .

As far as them replacing it, I talked to my Dad who recently switched from being a GM service manager to Subaru, and he said he'd do it for anyone since there's no cost or time for his guy to put back my old torque converter or to slap in a new one that I provide. He also said for a job like this, they would not check the ECM/TCM nor need GM approval.

We'll see how agreeable my local guy is! Too bad the old man isn't a GM guy anymore!!

If the shop is laid back then they should allow you to give them an aftermarket converter. Like you said its not effecting the tech in any way differently. However they will probably note it in the repair order so if it fails they are not held responsible.
