I started making up this long thread with a ton of detail, but I will make this pretty short. Please just ask if you need anymore details.
1. 2003 2500HD with 74k miles. 2 wheel drive, not 4.
2. Very small transmission leak coming out of the inspection hole next to the filter.
3. Never leaking enough to even notice it on my driveway.
4. Chevy dealer and two other professionals looked and said it appeared to be the transmission front seal of the Allison 1000.
5. Took to small shop down the street. Started taking it apart, but then said he wasn't able to get the seal from Chevy. Had to order from Allison.
6. Asked if now that he had more time to look, was sure it was just the seal. Was told used little camera to look up in there, and could see the seal was leaking.
7. Got call asking me to come down to the shop. Was shown TC, and told it was leaking from welds in picture.
8. Told rebuilt TC would be $1200, or new one from Allison was $1800. Told him I needed some time to think about it.
9. Called friend that is a service manager, started pricing on E-bay, called Allison for pricing.
10. E-bay around $500 rebulit. Allison distributor called back saying had local for $910 out the door. This was for a new part.
11. Friend said leaking from the weld didn't add up, one of his techs said the same.
12. Found local shop the does nothing but converters. Had little interest in selling me one, but much interest it seeing mine for testing.
13. Converter hooked up to 120 PSI and dunked in water tank. Looked over for about 10 minutes, never a bubble. Said in 19 years, never seen that happen with Allison 1000 TC.
14. Converter shop laughed when I told him $1200, said he would give me wholesale price for another, but if his truck he wouldn't replace.
15. Told shop owner to replace seal as originally discussed. If still leaking from converter, I understand that is my problem, not his.
16. Had also brought him TSB 03-07-30-057, and that I wanted the copper washer put in there while it was all apart. This was ignored, and not done.
17. Got call just before 6PM saying to come get it. Secretary saying credit card machine is broken, so bring cash or check. Then heard mechanic in the backgroud saying only cash.
18. Was supposed to be $400 to pull tranny and replace seal. Turned into $400 labor, $37 for the seal, and 6 qts transmission fluid at $17 a qt.
19. Bill also states NO PARTS & LABOR WARRANTY. Doesn't want to give warrantly on seal that was replaced.
20. Told to get machine fixed, I will pick up truck when I can pay with my credit card.
Please take a look at pictures, and let me know your thoughts. He is telling me that early Allison TC's had this problem. I have read about them sometimes leaking from the tabs, but not the center weld. Also told if it was leaking from TC, it would be very noticable. Like spraying tranny fluid, not a small leak like I am seeing.
Alright, I lied. Still long post. Very frustrated.
