Any one have a trick on installing torque converter bolts? I can only imagine how I'm going to torque them. I remover them with a four foot extension from the front. Figured you guys would have some tricks by now.

I use 30" of extentions and install from the front. Take a small piece of shop rag to hold the bolt into the socket and torque to 60 lbs.

And make sure you use a NEW 15MM socket. ask me how I know. you donw have to torque them just blue loctite and gat them as tight as you can with a ratchet. if you socket looks worn at all get a new one.

While your at it; get a magnetic socket. It helps a lot.

Try to let the loc-tite cure for the full 24hr cure time too!

I don't know if it's ever been an issue on the Allison, but there's a few guys that have had issues on the TBSS forum with the bolts backing out after a torque converter upgrade when they didn't let the loc-tite cure, granted the 4L70 only has 3 bolts connecting the flexplate tho...

Torque to spec? Aren't they usually held in by that new cross thread procedure? :D x2 on the mag socket

Not necessary for the loc tite to cure if the bolts are clean. If they're oily it won't work anyways.

I probably have taken my tranny out a dozen times in the last month and hundreds of times prior. I would guess I can do it blindfolded. I always use a smudge of locktite on the threads, I prefer red, then a paper towel piece between the bolt and socket to hold the bolt in.( I use paper towel cause it works well and if it don't come out it ends up disintegrating. Use a deep well socket and a lil "choad" extension as I like to call them, the one inch extension that is. I start it by hand then run it in with a small electric right angle ratchet then back it off a smudge till I have all the bolts in. Then I make a final torque pass which I myself have never used a torque wrench on my converter bolts, but I have also been doing this awhile. If u can torque them.

I don't use the long extensions. Just use a deepwell socket on a 3/8 ratchet and lay under the truck.

That is how I perform it as well. And the lil "choad " with the deepwell seems to b the best setup. If u have someone to turn the engine for you while you do tend to the bolts it makes the job more pleasure able as well

Ive had the best luck pulling the passenger tire and plastic inner fender. Gives you access to everything and allows you to see everything a lot better.

I also pull the passenger wheel liner and use my 3/8 impact with a swivel socket. I use red loctite when installing.

Well I got them installed last night. Put lock tight on all bolts and used a 3/8 ratchet with stubby extension and a deep well. Now I tighten them as much as I could. Should that be good enough? I thought about going back around on them again tonight. Should I do that or will that hurt the lock tight? I just don't want the bolts to loosen up

You laid under the truck and pushed up on the rachet? Right? That should be good enough. You haemve a lot of power that way.
