Allison 5sp: Too much clearance with the C3s

I am running a ATS kit in the tranny of my 01. ATS recommends a clearance on the C3s to be .040-.060", which is the same clearance as stock. My used clutch pack now currently has .070" clearance and the clutches all look good so I plan on reusing them.

My question is, what if any issues could I expect if I leave the .070 clearance?

The reason I ask is the tranny was assembled by a local tranny shop about 18 months ago, ever since then there has been an inconsistent shift hang up during iirc the 2-3 shift. During this refresh the C3s and C4s were replaced. I am now currently going through the tranny myself and checking absolutely everything, and this clearance is the only thing so far that is out of tolerance.

Well im unsure of what kind of damage it could cause but in the allys ive seen too much clearance is bad. in one case on my buddies ATS style trans it caused the c3 apply piston to rip and then youd get nothing from the c3s. id think you may lose a little bit of grip when that pack was actuated but i dont know for sure because the tolerance is relatively close. on his we mixed clutches and steels until we got the tolerances right and its been fine for around 20k

So what should the clearances be when he goes to put that back together and call it a day?

I think you should call ATS for your answer. Remember what I told you.:D

I would listen to Mike L his tranny's have not caused us any problems like the others you have mentioned. We have had them in and out a couple of times due to werd shifting.

You do not have to buy from me to get my help. Many people can attest to this. I have helped Jon in the past but he chose to trash my new crossmember for the Alli. I even posted that it was for cosmetic purposes. He and his bung hole buddy would not let it go. I told him in that thread he would never get help from me again.
Do you remember now Jon?

It will be okay, if you are real worried get a thicker steel.

The .070 clearance means nothing as far as shifting. keep looking.

I never said it would, I was just helping the guy out since you wont.

Do you feel better about yourself when you belittle me?
