I wouldn't let my lady buy big stuff for the truck. If she had a blingin new car and lots of cash maybe but I wanna build and buy my own personally.

Here is what I've had to put up with from Ross.

He shows me a 1967 Fleetwood Caddy on ebay nearly 2 years ago and tells me he thinks he's going to buy it. I say "mmmm nice, but it's in Indiana and we are in Australia" Nothing more is said and 3 days later I'm at work and get an email saying "Oh $h!t I bought it, can you arrange to pay for it....."

So we had a friend pick it up, and arrange freight to LA, then it was shipped to Australia. All along the way "Cindy can you arrange for this bill to be paid" Yes, after 18 years together I'm still stuck with the finances - he's happy to go to the ATM and get cash, but that's about it!....

3 months later car finally makes it to Australia, Ross starts to work on it and discovers it needs a new Chassis and it can't be registered. Car sits in my Dads factory for 6 months while we find another chassis, and ship it out.

New Chassis arrives, more bills are paid, and the next 3 or 4 months are spent fixing the Caddy. It's in excellent condition, however some of the mechanicals and fittings need to be changed to meet Australian regulations. It remains right hand drive. Finally get it registered 13 months after it arrives here (the week before Christmas 2007), so he brings it home and realizes our garage is about 9' too short and it doesn't fit.....(okay we did know this in advance, and we do have space to store it around the side of the house, but it's size only became a problem when the car came home)

Ross proceeds to spend pretty much each evening and weekend over the next 3 or 4 months playing around with the car - kids and wife pretty much take a back seat. Fast forward another few months, and Ross has grand plans for a new carport to house the Caddy.

Winter is now here and each time he takes it out he's digging up my lawn because it weighs a tonne and we've had a bit of rain  but the carport doesn't seem to be progressing. In the end, I'm the one who contacts council and gets the building permits. He did arrange the builder. Winter is over by the time we are ready to start construction.

Finally in November the carport is done! We have the concreting put down in January and it's all finished :) .....or so we thought.....about 4 weeks ago we had some teenager hurl an 8 pound rock at it in the middle of the night. Luckily it didn't do too much damage - just a small stone chip which is almost out of site - thankfully gravity played a good part in ensuring the damage was minimal.

So we are now in the process of converting the carport into a garage by covering in one side and one end and putting a roller door on the other end. The carport is attached to the house so it will become fully enclosed.

Our running tally to date is that we've spent twice as much on the carport/driveway/garage than the Caddy has cost us. We all LOVE the Caddy, it's a fun car to travel around in.

However little does Ross know that at some stage in the future I'm going to find a hobby and it's going to be just as expensive! Oh, revenge is sweet!

All that said, it was only a matter of time before Ross got a toy - my family has always had toys, I grew up with the smell of gasoline and oily rags. Hotted up cars, and particularly American muscle cars were part of our daily lives. Dad now has a collection of about 7, so it was bound to rub off.

Cheers
Cindy
