Tires are cupping

Mid September I bought some pro-comp extreme a/t and replaced upper /lower ball joints and inner /outer tie rods all MOOG crap. I recently took note that my front tires are cupping really bad, which made me sick, the tires have about 7k miles and the front ones are at 50‰ while the rears are still in new condition. I had the truck aligned after all that. It never did that with my toyo a/t's. I wish I would of noticed earlier. I need to take it to get the tires rotated and realigned, I'm pretty sure the morons at ted wiens screwed something up.

O Damn Joe, that sucks...

Post a pic looking at the front of your truck, from about 15' away with the camera angle about 2' to 3' off the ground shooting level...

I wanna see the toe angle
;)

Im sure you already know but, typically, cupping on the outside=toe in, inside=toe out, middle dead center =high tire pressure and just out of center=low tire pressure.

Ive heard nothing but good things about ProComp tires before, sorry youre not having such good luck man, tires be expensive!

you need to rotate those tires more than every 7k miles. i rotated mine every 3-5k or when i noticed the outer treads starting to cup a bit on the front. fronts got cross rotated to the back and rears went straight to the front. make sure your running 45psi or more in the front tires as well

If the alignment is good, you shouldn't have to rotate that often. I do try to rotate every 5k just to keep wear even (I do a 5-tire rotation, so my spare gets rotated through), but often I forget, and just do it with the oil change (~10k). I still get 40k+ life from the tires.

but we are talking about a 37" tire that weights 80-90lbs before adding a wheel, then placing said tire and wheel on a lift kit that has a horrible reputation for increasing the bad bumpsteer we already have and compounding it with steering angles that make the biggest tie rods scared for their life. all while the factory arms/bushings/hubs are trying their best to keep this heavy setup under control and in line.

the tires joe is running are the same tires ive ran before on the same size truck on the same exact lift. :D

Gotcha :thumb:

Yeah, I run larger tires than stock (315/70R17, or about 35"), but on stock suspension. With a lift, and 37" tires, I'm with you 100%. Rotate those bad boys!

As soon as I have a chance I'm rotating them. The truck drives straight and my t bars are 1/4 cranked. The inner side is where it's worse.

Did you change the front end ride height at all after they did your wheel alignment? I have seen people make that mistake quite a bit.

Nope, took it in at the height I wanted. I believe the method James mentioned is the proper way to rotate them. Hopefully you don't have directional tires.

i know but its still high. if you were at my height, you would be rubbing the back fender any time you turned the wheel, i still have just a bit of downward angle on my tie rods even with flat CVs. craptech for ya

James, what upper ball joint do you use?

Napa NCP part number ones. just replaced my passenger side one a few weeks ago, driverside is still tight as can be. Lifetime warranty and still last a long time

i know yours are directional but crossing them will help keep the ride decent and wear the top edges off better. running those procomps backwards wont any kind of an issue other than looks. once you get them somewhat worn down, you can flip the backs around and just make sure you keep up on rotating them. if they are SEVERELY cupped, you may never get them worn back flat before the fronts start cupping bad.

my inner and outer edges always stayed a little cupped as the back end couldnt weight the tires down enough to wear the cupped edges flat so kept a closer eye on the center treads. you cant over rotate a truck :D

With my alignment correct I need to rotate my MTZs every 3k or so or they will get choppy. It's part of the nature of this MT I'm used to. I get about 50k out of them. More aggressive tires need to be rotated more often I believe.
