Friend does the towing for local town and is looking to replaced the 6.4 he has now.

I know it will be biased but, any opinions, things to look out for, etc on the new Dodge or Ford drivetrains? Won't ever be tuned, may have DPF etc removed but thats it.

Thanks guys!

My uncle just bought a low mileage 6.7L Cummins and he likes it. He said the throttle had a lot of dead spots and the mileage was horrible. But then he did an H&S and delete kit and said his mileage went up almost 6mpg and the drivablility improved greatly.

I thought the new cummins had weaker rods in em?

Either way, I am just trying to give advice on a truck that will be converted to a wrecker, so no race truck, just a work truck.

unless u are trying to make 1000hp u dont need to worry about the rods. ive seen the newer trucks make 700hp w no problems

Haven't spent much time in the dodges, but a buddy of mine has an 012 ford and that thing is super nice. Just did a h&s and we put a straight pipe on it, and it is no slouch. He pulls a lot of cattle and heavy equipment, he says it pulls extremely well.

my bro has a 2011 megacab, great truck! As long as you keep the power down they trans and head studs last a long time.

If he is planning on putting power down, the trans is weak and the factory head studs don't tolerate much boost.

Very comfortable trucks for long hauls too. Love my bro's mega cab!

Nah, it will not get any sort of power tune.

OK so both newer trucks are pretty decent it seems?

Seems to be the verdict. I forgot to mention his dad drives a 2012 mega cab, and he says they are about the same size leg room wise. Just the mega reclines and has all the extra room behind the back seat.

The rods in the 6.7l Cummins are they same as they were in past years. Cummins did change the piston cooling nozzle spray point, as well as coating the piston skirts for the 385hp calibration. Cummins was going for 400hp but Chrysler said they will work on the gearing / use the extra tq to make it "feel" faster. If I were him, I would get a 3500 with the Aisin trans, lots of issues with the 68rfe IIRC. The turbo brake on the Cummins holds back VERY good too!

That's the worst idea I've ever heard. The Aisin is a piece of crap, the 68 can be built to hold pretty respectable power.

There are three reasons to avoid Dodge's:

1) When you pull up somewhere people ask where their parts are and give you a tracking number.

2) You get marriage proposals from family members.

3) Dentists leave business cards on your windshield.

The aisin is holding up great for us in the oil fields they have taken the same tune power as a 68rfe has... if its junk why would run it with there high out put 385/850 trucks?

A the 6.7 is awesome my parents have a 12 mega cab love that thing! It has the deletes, h&S mini and gets a soild 18-20mpg empty and around 10-14 towing depending on.load/grades ect
