Thinking about contacting ATP for a tune, any input?

Hi everyone, I am thinking about contacting ATP to make up a tune for my LBZ, just wanted to get some opinions. Ive read a lot about Idaho Rob being the man for tuning, but would appreciate any feedback or suggestions on who to go with.

I am new here, usually I just lurk because a good amount of answers can be found via searching, but I have a more specific question regarding tuning services that I haven't found a clear answer on. I have some aftermarket parts on my truck, like cold air intake, now with ram scoop (XMAS yay!), BMW, intercooler, transgo jr, removed grid heater etc etc; so my truck isn't stock, will any of the tuners out there actually build a tune that takes what I have installed into account when building the tune for me? Maybe even look at some data logs? I certainly want to be as smoke free and trans safe as possible. Thankfully, when I had the transgo jr installed at Mike L's shop he said my transmission was still looking great :woott: and I want to keep it like that till I can afford to build it up, thanks again Mike if you ever see this.

I am by no means a diesel tuner, but I feel like the larger volume intercooler for one takes longer to pressurize, it feels like I've lost some of the pep that I had down low. Can anyone with experience tell me if I can get that bottom end response back without risking damage to the transmission?

TL/DR Any input would be appreciated. Would it be worth it to get a tune? A little extra power would be nice if it's not risking the tranny, but mainly in it for, hopefully, restoring response after upgrading various parts.

Thanks!

Yes EFI live would wake your truck up, achieve better mpg, and make it run more efficiently. I would deal with Danville performance for EFI live tuning however, Mark Broviak and his staff are top notch and have the best customer service in the business.

Been running Rob's tunes for over 4 years, no complaints. There are other good tuners out there but I only have personal experience with Rob.

I can't comment on Robs tuning although I've heard great things about him. Any tuner should be willing to look at logs and adjust the tune if you aren't happy.

I would also consider Tony @ RidgeRunner, he does lifetime free updates.

Depending on your location, schedule a dyno tune session with Danville. Great to deal with, and its always fun to see what your truck puts down :thumb:

What brand intercooler did you install.? Just remember the Allison TCM remembers what did not what your going to do at next stoplight or the next pedal downshift to pass another car, that will limp your transmission even at 100hp over stock.

So if you're driving like grandpa beware you run the risk of slipping the transmission when you go pedal to the metal or a WOT run....

Most all the tuners websites I have been on be sure and read the disclaimer, an EGT gauge is a minimum. As far as increasing fuel mileage, more than likely not at least that is my experience as you're driving a 7000lbs. rolling hunk of metal....

How did you remove the grid heater and not throw a CEL.?

I've been running Robs tunes for 4 years and have been very pleased with their customer service and my trucks performance.

My dad had his truck tuned by Dustin @ Diesel Addiction and is pleased with their service and his trucks performance.

You can't go wrong with any of the tuners on here.

rob makes good tunes, and their customer service has always been above and beyond for me. Mine is an LLY, having the tunes adjusted for added parts has always been simple. As well as being able to upgrade to "buikt trans tunes" when the time comes.

thanks for the feedback guys I think I will go ahead and get a tune, now my problem is deciding who to go to for the tune.

@C20Elephant
I installed a banks technicooler because it available at a good price and looked well built, plus it wasnt full of egr/pcv goo. I already have efi flashscan, gauges, and about everything I want on the truck for now minus a lift pump. Not really looking for more peak power till down the road when I can afford to build the trans, I know it is a weak point so I limit to 4th gear around town and try to be gentle on the freeway. The reason I am looking at getting it tuned is to try and restore bottom end response. The truck is far enough from stock that I know values need to be changed, but I have zero experience in tuning diesel motors.

@PureHybrid
A dyno sheet would be cool to have, I'd be more interested to know that I am not putting out more peak HP than the stock trans can handle.
