been an interesting past couple months.
Link to what happened over the 4th of july weekend
So finally after 10 years, I’ve got our shop/people in place enough that I don’t have to stick around to go on the 4th of July vaca up to silverton, co. 9 days up in cold weather (compared to phx lol), fishing, hiking, wheeling, beautiful sites and good friends/family. Anyhow, let’s get into...

And to pick back up, codes on my truck came back on that monday into work. i left the codes and took the truck into the deal. They cleared them, updated ECM with an update that had nothing do with injector timing codes and sent me on my way. I asked why it wasnt looked into further and seems that due to the TSB on those codes, they need to see if they come back. I told him i have screen shots of the 5 different time it threw codes along with the freeze frame data. i dont think the service writer expected that and just asked i drive it again till they come back. i said ok but it leaves me on the side of the road and we will have issues...
so i park the truck till we go up north camping 2 weeks later. Hitch up, headed up the rim towards Payson and enjoyed just how god damn well this thing pulls. 65mph with the 5th wheel and 2 quads inside. Just blowing by other trucks/trailers. Fan would hit full blast at 225* and knock temps right back to 200* and cycle. man that is nice just to keep your foot in it and have no worries.... or so i thought. got to the camp site and "oh hi there, its me again, the MIL (not to be confused with MILF
)". sure as shit, injector timing codes for out of range and retarded on all 8 injectors. i leave the codes and enjoy the weekend. We head home and truck runs fine the whole way, just sounds like a damn LB7 at stops. by time i was backing the trailer in at home that evening, i could tell something was up. Exhaust was smoking white at idle and you could tell the DPF was HOT! great... work was busy as hell so i didnt get a chance to take it to the dealer till that thursday. Drop it off and he calls me at the end of the day (same service writer ive been seeing) that they got it to throw the codes again after clearing them, also found an air leak as it threw an air leak code via the O2 sensors, fixed that. Went for another test drive and threw a DPF full code and went into limp. they brought it back, did two back to back re-gens, got down to 4 ppm in the DPF and went for another drive. now 10 miles later, same DPF code and limp. Tech was pretty sure the DPF was shot inside and needed a new one. of course, those are on back order and no sign of when they would ship. SW tells me he has another truck thats been waiting on a DPF for 6 days so far.
Now, im sitting here going "well that makes no sense, if its throwing injector timing codes, IMHO the injectors are causing the DPF to back up or melt its self, its not just a bad DPF". in the mean time, i need a rental and they have none. so i bug the SW each day looking for one and finally 2 days later, i just go down there because i dont think they are going about this right. Now at the time, i was not told they did 2 re-gens, they got it down to 4 ppm in the filter, and all the other tests the tech did, just that it was bad and needed replaced. So i storm in pissed and start grilling the SW. he doesnt quite have the answers i need so he asks if i want to talk with the tech. HELL yeah! So we go back, he introduces me to him and we start chatting. Im trying to think how to ask him why he thinks its only the DPF without me sounding like a dick. he dont know me, i dont know him and i sure as hell know from being a mechanic years ago how this goes down lmao. I basically just explain to him what ive seen and the full history of the codes. he agreed it could be injectors but he has another truck with the same exact DPF codes and no injector codes so hes gotta start there first. At him, he says, you get a new DPF that the injectors may have hurt. totally agreed with him but i just said, i dont want to hurt this one either. he agreed and told me his plan to test on the highway a few times and put about 100 miles on the truck. Perfect. In the mean time, SW finds me a sweet chevy trax
to rent and i head home.
took about a week and a half but GM finally got a DPF for the truck to the dealer and they threw it in. took it out and tested as he stated and no codes. i pick it up and its idling smooth, no rattle, and feels nice to be back in her again. Awesome! but i still have my reservations this isnt over yet. i dont trust the injectors but time will have to prove that.
Just a little update on her. Seems DPF's might be an issue and was also told the cooling fan will not kick on like its suppose to with the a/c on, causing high head pressure on the a/c and turning it off. mine has not done that but it mainly sees highway anyhow.
