i hope this is the right place to ask, if not move the thread if need be.

i'm really wanting to get back to the gym. i had surgery and now i can go back and its been awhile. so i need to freshen up on what supplements. like protein, pre-work out and such. so what do you take and how did it work out? i want to build first then i'll work on slimming down.

i got pretty big before and i was just taking black powder for pre-work out and drinking muscle milk for protein.

I use muscle milk after workout, and alternate with GNC's pro performance muscle meal. Works great for me. :thumb:

i liked muscle milk i always had one before bed mixed with 1% milk. doing this i wouldn't wake up starving in the middle of the night. before i started doing that i would wake up 2-3am with bad hunger pains.

a few guys i know use the gold standard stuff. but you have to buy whey and casiene going that route. i seen this stuff called myotech last night. but it cost more than muscle milk and has less protein per serving than muscle milk.

2-3G's protein per pound of goal weight. Since ur not slimming down, I'd go with about the same intake of good carbs. Like weat.

Preworkout, anything with nitric oxide is pretty good. I never bought into the whole pre workout shake bs that all the major companies push. It's all based on nitric oxide. You can just get a strictly nitric oxide supplement instead of their bs. And caffeine is good also. It will help keep you focused.
On pre workout supplement that a lot of people over look is a slow acting carb. Like weat bread or a somewhat heavy protein shake that isn't low carbs. You need to consume that about an hour or two before your workout. It will be your workout fuel.

Post workout meals are arguably the most important meal to have. Slack on this and your work out accomplishes nothing to very little. After a workout your body is in a catabolic state. You need to replenish it ASAP. It's great to raise your insulin levels immediately following the work out. This is done by consuming fast acting carbs. Like white bread or rice. The ideal carb you want is a 50/50 mix maltodextrin and dextrose. Haribo gummy bears (believe it or not) are a perfect mix. Then of course, follow that insulin boost with a good solid meal high in protein.

Be careful with a lot of the supplements. A lot of them are just a waste of money. Your best bet is to just eat a really clean diet.

What did you get an operation on? Have you considered dpi g a different type of workout other than lifting? Lifting can wreak havoc on a joint recently operated on.
I'm only 24 and have lifted heavy for about 6 years. That plus the training I've gone through in the military, hAs F-ED my joints up. Fruit for thought. Lifting is brutal on your Body.

Cr5 30 minutes before workout

1. GNC's Mega Men Sport pill at lunch

2. Jack3d 30mins before workout (This stuff really gets me amped up)

3. 2-3 scoops of AMP Amplified Mass XXX immediately after workout.

So far I'm impressed with the results :woott:.

I actually take straight l-arginine everyday. The gnc one "arginine 5000". It worked for me just as good as the more expinsive stuff for soreness and what not. It funny you mention those gummy bears. I keep a bag of them in my back pack for post work out. I think 12 was the magic number. I can't eat alot of wheat. It gives me the shuts real bad. That's why I had my surgery lol. I didn't know I had a sensitivity to wheat and I was eating whole wheat everything. From noodles to breads. And I constantly had the shits. Well some how I managed to strain too bad and got a hernia. No not the asshole thing lol a hernia up front. How I'm not sure it's not like I was constipated. Anyway I had it fixed finally, doc told me to start slow and that squats would not be a good idea. Everything else would be ok but squats would put too much pressure.

When I first started lifting (27 first time ever) I pack on muscle fast and hit 300 on the bench in like 3 months. I'm already a big guy. But I was shoulder pressing 110lb dumb bells in 3-4 months. I grew fast but my elbows took a beating like you said. Well I found a cure. Nobody listen and they all had issues but I took osteobiflex. It's like old people meds (that's what everybody said). But it has tons of stuff made just for joints. And with in a week or two of taking it I was good. I was amazed and extremely happy. No more pops and crackles. Lol.

Where I'm going Ina few months I don't think I'll have the ability to have any sort of clean diet. Lol.

I love the taste of muscle milk but it is one of the worst proteins for you. its got a rediculous ammount of fats, sugars and carbs.

optimal nutrition has a really good low carb whey protein that tastes pretty good. obviously nothing out there will take the place of muscle milk taste wise but there are plenty of others that produce better results.

nitric oxide as previously said before work out, Optimum nutrition post workout and optimal nutrition casein protein before bed.

well balanced diet is key for me in the end to gainign lean mass and cutting weight simeltaneously.

I feel ya there. It's hard to find something for big guys that doesn't leave you hungry. I'm 6'3" @256. I'd like to loose some fat too. When I was going before my pants fit the same but I got to 295lbs. I didn't mind the weight too much but I wanna loose the gut this time.

I tried the jack3d right before I stopped working out. I really liked it. At the time it was kinda new. I may just go back to it. It had a very tiny scoop, mixed well and didn't leave me burpy. Black powder gave me mad burps. Lol.

The optimal nutrition is the one guys at work use and seem to really like. So I guess. Uh the whey for day time use and the cassiene for night time use? And my favorite, the gummy bears for post work out right before the post work out whey shake.

I don't get carried away in the gym, just like to keep fit and strong. I'm 6'4" 225 so I'm about where I want to be. For me I don't use supplements, I just stopped drinking soda, caffeine and cut out a few things from my diet (french fries for example). I noticed that after I did that, I started building muscle faster and feeling better. I don't have anything against supplements, I just think that sometimes taking some things out of your diet can have a lot of effect too!

Yea man thats the way to do it. People get sold on $50 bottles of supplements just because of the marketing campaign. I used to also. Not gonna lie. Then I went to school for kines. And became more educated on the subject of sports med. And realized that wasn't the best route. Many of the products out there claim certain gains. Well you may get those gains, but could have gotten the same gains if you would have just did research and figured out the active ingredients and took just those ie.. 17-hd (just an example) the bottle is about $50 and claims huge gains in test. Well, that gain is from the tribulus testerus (I think that's spelled right) you can buy just the tribulus and get the exact same gains. But will coat 50% less.

As far as proteins go... When I was on a cutting cycle, I always used nitro tech. It's really low in fat and pretty low on carbs. I was eating a HUGE amount of protein every day. I found nitro tech to be a nice bridge between My 7 daily meals. Just because it was low in everything else other than protein.
On mass cycles, I'd just use weight gainers.

I got really into lifting on my first tour to Iraq. I had a very strict diet while I was there. I did a mass cycle for the first 4 months. Went from 210-255 with 13% BMI. then leaned down for the last 4 months (just for the girls back home :D ) and cut down to 240.
So I think you will be able to get back to were you want pretty quickly. I would wear a support belt for that hernia though. Just to be safe.

You say you can't have a clean diet were your going... Were you going to? Not jail right? Hahahahaha jk

Yes. Casien for night time. While you sleep, your fasting. When you fast... Your body goes catabolic (not good) casien reduces this. It's a slow acting protein. Usually takes about 7-8 hours to digest a 20g serving. Thus keeping you anabolic (good thing) while you sleep.
Some body builders even go as far as waking up half way through the night to eat a meal. Just so their body won't start breaking down. Not sure if they still do this, as it's more of an old timers thing... But I'm sure some do.

Here is on for you guys. One thing I noticed is say a chest day, I would go in and warm up with 225. We always did 10,8,6 for sets. It always seemed that my last set I would always be done. Like done done, there was no "hey one more". I would have nothing left. I tried a few times to get 7 on the 6 and the weight would just drop and have to be lifted up by my spotter. Now does this mean I was just getting it all and I was doing good or was I just not fuel right? We always lifted heavy. We (my lift partner and I) felt why go to the gym and stay small. :). Just our opinion.

Dieting and correct meal placement is key. Knowing when to eat and what to eat.
Also have a plan on what you are trying to achieve.
I don't lift extremely heavy anymore because of the joints and injuries. My philosophy is I don't need to be the strongest just the prettiest :thumb:
