California has large conservative regions, more square miles are controlled by the Republican congress than the Democrats.
But the two largest metropolitan areas are Liberal, and they control the media, legislature, and have the enormous backing of the Public Employee unions. Not to mention our reps in Wash DC are liberal.
This happens in many states with large cities. The large cities control the state.
