Thanks to everyone for the kind words!

What Kat posted pretty much says it all. Just working to get everything back in shape. I can't say enough good things about everyone that took hours out of their day to try and recover something from the last backup, but it had been corrupted.

I hope you know this, If I can do anything.

I wondered why I couldnt get on the site this morning. What a crying shame. My condolences go out to Wayne, Dave and the rest of the Garage gang.

Damn...all that work from the past two years...gone. I sure hope they find the a-hole responsible for stealing the data.

I have been backing it up every night onto my home computer for quite a while now. I also have a sata external hard drive that I'm setting up to backup my home computer to once a week and that drive will be locked in a media container that is rated at: 1/2-hour fire protection for CDs, DVDs, USB drives and memory sticks up to 1550°F. That will be locked inside my gun safe that has a 30 minute fire rating of its own.

If in the future I have to start doing multiple backups a day I will and then backup to the external drive more often. That will depend on traffic here but since it is picking up more and more I'll probably be doing it at least twice a day very soon.

Check with www.carbonite.com

I use that to automatically back up my PC and I have all my Pics, tune files, docs all automatically backed up with Carbonite.

They may have a corporate plan for web sites.

Wayne, thanks for giving Phil the heads up about this. I hope your data is recovered and the person(s) responsible are prosecuted completely.

If they got the database, they also got the password files.....

Changing my passwords across the forums as I type. Like a lot of you, I have a limited number of passwords I use. From simple to "secure" depending on the importance of the account.

IIRC, passwords are encrypted in vB software. It's the only thing that is. You can "reset" someone's password, but the admins cannot retrieve it. Unless the hacker is real computer programmer, he can't do anything; few are more than script-kiddies who read about a hack then follow the instructions.

But just to play it safe, it would be wise to change passwords.

The encryption is reversible. Takes a chunk of computer time though. Once the key is gleened, all the passwords decrypt.

Chances are small that they will take the time/expense to actually do that.

The part I don't get is the backups being wiped. That would take a different access than through the Vb systems front end. Plant a sleeper drone that backs up nothing for a while, then kills the database? Odd and far reaching. Anyone know who the service provider is?

OK, for those who own boards or are moderators at performance sites:

We are looking for 67.67.15.158 out of SWBell DSL Oklahoma City.

He is probably a Dodge or Ford guy, so those boards are most important to search.

For vB Software, you will go into the Admin panel->User->search by IP, and type 67.67.15.158 into the top box. If there is a user with that IP please forward the information. I checked here, and got no hits.

Thanks again for the kind words. We spent all night trying to get the forum back as far as we can before passing out last night. Dave (4cstr) and some other spent all night working.

Those of you that have met me I hope know that I would never wish this on anyone, I forgive and forget. I hold no grudge against anyone, ever. I take back friends that have done pure evil things to me in the past, and never questioned them again. Perhaps that is a character flaw, but I sleep well at night becasue of it.

The short story is the databse is gone, and the backup was corrupted. I have a server being built now that will include off site RAID backed up every 60 minutes. When it is completed, we will migrate the site to the new server. For those who asked, we are currently with HostGator.com

Thanks again for the words of encouragement, it means alot!
