When shifting into reverse it won't go in unless you rev it then it slams in. The old owner may have put a shift kit on it.sticking valve?

Possible burned reverse band or burned direct clutches. Could be misplaced check ball in valve body.

I told this jackass what you said and offered to help him but he said it was his torque converter and his "racing engine". So the dip shit destroyed it 2 days later. He thought reving the crape out of it to get to move was normal.

That snapping sound when it finally catches isn't a good thing. I hope you told him, "Here's your sign".

I looked at it after, and the pump was ground up. Then looking at the flex plate and seeing that someone put a counter balance plate (383 stroker 400 crank) in between it . So I'm guessing that at one time this motor had a manual and was switched over to a auto but they did not use a 400 flex plate instead a sbc plate and the counter balance plate.

If in fact this car was stick shift, the pilot bushing should have been removed from the crank. Many time the converter nose cannot fit into the back of crank pilot and will destroy the pump. This should have been caught at installation time.

I've seen this happen, and people say F IT, I've got an impact to pull them down and force it in.
