got the same problem...again.. steels slightly blued..

this time i have pulled about 150-200hp out of the engine by swaping heads froma 215cc intake with 2.05/1.6 vlv to a 170cc intake wiht a 1.94/1.5 and a 750 carb to a 600... pluss pull timeing

i got red clutches and kolene steals..

this is getting anoying

You've got a problem--fix the trans, not detune the engine! The TH-400 can handle all you can throw at it with a 383. Recommend Ron Session's book on the Turbo Hydra-Matic 400. How's the detent solenoid?

detunue is a temp fix... also had somethign go wrong with it... kinda killed two bird wiht one stone...
yes i know a TH400 should hold 600hp+ with brown alto clutches and regualr steels..
new kit has red eagle and kolene steels
I got a book if you want me to send it, its the ATSG book.
got one its covered in oil:thumb: thanks
Call me in the morning.

will do..

did find out this comparing pics to the holes/paths in the gaskests, seprator plate and VB the one i have/had on there had soem port directly related to the direct clutch competely blocked off.. this one is stamped 4000 (so you and i can tell them a part) had a 4000 in the tranny both time this has happened
also have one stamped 2260 and another 4000
quick refence
the 2260 has a hole were the 4000 doesnt.. in relation to the direct clutch port on the VB and case. AIW the ATSG pictures/dieaghrams

might have found the problem.. dont know... will post more later... break is almost over.. schools out 0130 EST:thumb:

edit.. the 2260 is the top plate the 4000 is the bottom plate.. the hole that is blocked... covers direct clutch port on the VB and Case.. IMO could be the reason why i have low 3rd gear pressure

got the tranny back in with help from fingers.:beer
went ahead and put the red clutches and kolene steels, the 2260 stamped spacer plate and the pump booster valve in..
holds ALOT BETTER.. havent done a pressure test yet..:D

also he helped get new springs and my exhaust patched back up

put 14"x300lb springs in the wagon... which helped..

BTW his truck is pretty FAST :thumb:

Check the center support. the bolt that has the hole drilled in the center feeds direct clutch oil. I have seen them leak between bolt and case. 4L80E used one of improved design, but was longer. I machined them to the proper length for a 400.

well had a chance to test the tranny..
needless to say it didnt slip.. nor did it burn the fluid..
2400 stall kinda helped get it rolling too..
about 11k worth of trucks and 9k of trailer.

I was surprised with the weight of the trailer too but it does appear to be dual tandem axles.

I'm thinking he's saying the tow truck PLUS the truck being hauled = 11000# plus 9000# for the trailer equaling, well, you can do the math, 20000 #. :D

the 75 GMC is ~5500-6000
the 2nd gen whit dodge on the trailer is ~6,000
the GN trailer is 9,000 empty... it is rated for 30,000lb and the duals are 12,000 each. on a spread setup.

in anther words 11,000lb worth of trucks and a 9,000 trailer equals ~20,000
