Tech2 RS232 Pinout

Does anyone happen to have the pinout of a known working Tech2 DB9-JR45 RS232 cable? I can't get my Tech2 to connect to the PC, and can't figure out why... Are there any specific settings that need to be set on the COM port to make it work?

Dave I think you'll need to go to the dealer and borrow one/check their settings...

Ive given up on making my tech 2 connect to my own PC. When I need to update a module, I just request sps info, then take my tech 2 to my dealer, have them plug it in, and then give the tech 2 back to me..

IIRC, it's a normal pass-thru, not a null-modem (which has 2-3 & 3-2 swap).

But if I were you, I'd get a USB/RS232 converter and just do it through the USB. Always use the same USB port and it works fine.

In any case, the first time you use it, you need to experiment with the COMport settings. 9600 is the baud rate.

Ben, I don't know what USB > RS232 adapter Pat uses, but the most stable one I've ever used (and currently use) is a UR-2000M2 from QVS. It uses a Prolific chipset and was the only one I was able to get running reliably under 64-bit Vista.

Not nessicarily... There's no "Standard" RS232 DB9 > RJ45 wiremap, so what will work on one device, won't work on another. They're all different....

The pinout on the cable that came with my Tech 2 is as follows:

DB9 - RJ45
1 - n/c
2 - 5
3 - 3
4 - n/c
5 - 6
6 - n/c
7 - 8
8 - 1
9 - n/c

I have no idea if it's right, wrong, has one or more broken wires, etc...

I doubt that your cable is shot. I'm really disappointed with how poorly the Tech2 is engineered for it's cost. I had to fiddle with it a lot before I got the cable to communicate correctly.

I used to have to write COM driver software like plotter drivers and mice when I wrote CAD/CAM software in a previous life. It doesn't have to suck that bad, especially WHEN THEY CONTROL BOTH ENDS of the communication. Best I can guess is the company who wrote the software did not tie in with the company who made the tool. And WTF with selling a COM port device years after computer mfr's stopped supporting them.

SERIOUSLY!!! For the most part they stopped making PC's with legacy ports years ago.

I completely agree, it really is frustrating how clumsy some of the things on the tech 2 are.
