Does anyone know when the Tech II will be replaced by a newer scan tool from GM. Mine has a major problem and I need to send it out for repair or buy a new one.

GM is at the very beginning of phasing out the Tech 2, its being replaced with a laptop based software/hardware interface called the MDI. However I would still send your Tech 2 out for repair; the Tech 2 is still completely up to date and wont be phased out completely for several years. As of right now the only vehicle that will not be compatible with the Tech 2 (and requires the new MDI tool for diagnostics) is the 2010 Camaro...

Will the MDI be backwards compatible, so you could replace the tech II with the MDI

From the article ben posted

The Future of the Tech 2
The Tech 2 remains an essential tool through at least the
2010 model year. The GM MDI will not support past models
when its diagnostic capabilities are introduced. And, the Tech
2 will continue to be needed to diagnose all vehicles from
previous model years.
Remote programming with the Tech 2 will continue to be
supported for use on all 2007 and previous vehicles.
Additional information will be supplied in future TechLink
articles and dealer communications.

as of right now, the MDI doesnt support diagnostics (it does support programming though) for pre-GMLAN vehicles (GMT-800). It does support programming on Class 2 vehicles though.

As far as I know, the MDI wont theoretically be a true 100% functional replacement for the tech 2 until maybe another 8 months or so, because GM hasnt implemented ALL of the Tech 2's features/capabilities into the MDI yet...

However, there is software available through gmde, that allows you to use the mdi and laptop as a diagnotic tool, and also includes other brands as well, but not all functions are available yet, such as bidi controls, and communication with some modules.

The new diagnostics is actually called GDS, requires a MDI and is in use right now on the new Camaro and soon on other models. It can be downloaded from TIS2 web right now. I already have it on both my home pc and laptop.

also go ahead and fix your tech 2 as only vehicles with the Global diagnostics platform will be supported by the GDS system for the near future,,, all others will still require the tech 2.

and the 2010 Equinox doesn't come out till next month. We did get our first few new Camaros in this week so we've been messing w/ the GDS on them. Kinda weird after using the Tech II for so long.
