I'm in the same boat. Really want my own personal one. A little searching I've done sounds like the China made Tech II's are junk but the China CANdi modules are surviving.

Ive heard mixed reviews on the chinese knock-off Tech 2's. More good than bad, but still you arent "guaranteed" a flawless unit like you would be if you bought a real Tech 2.

I have never seen a chinese Tech 2 in real life. My Tech 2 is a genuine SPX/OTC unit.

That being said, I do have a chinese knock-off CANdi module. It was only like $140 shipped to me. Ive had it for years and never had a problem, it works perfectly...

chinese CANdi modules.

looks like theyve gone down even further in price. $99.

You might also consider buying an MDI... Its the replacement/successor to the Tech 2. Many of the newer GM vehicles that have mid-speed GMLAN, LIN, and MOST busses are not compatible with the Tech 2 and require you to use the MDI instead. (IE, most of the 2013+ GM cars, the 2010+ camaro, 2010+ equinox).

As for the 2014+ K2XX next gen trucks/SUV's...I dont know if those are compatible with Tech 2 or require MDI, but if they require MDI, I would just get an MDI instead of a Tech 2.

I love my Tech 2 though....its built like a rock/durable, its quick and easy to use and boots up in like 3 seconds. Compared to the MDI, you have to drag a [delicate] laptop around, you have to have clean hands (unless you want grease and shit on your laptop), you have to deal with Windows, wait for Windows to boot up, and its just clumsier because you are using a mouse to do everything rather than dedicated keys like with Tech 2.

Ill never get rid of my Tech 2 for that reason. Its just so easy/quick to use, you can drop it, use it with dirty hands, etc. But obviously if the K2XX trucks require MDI, Ill have to get an MDI......but I still prefer Tech 2.

Cra##y China versions does not work in duramaxes, work's only passenger cars of GM

the chinese CANdi modules work fine on duramax's.

I dont see why a chinese Tech 2 wouldnt work? Ive heard of guys using them on duramax's with no problems.

My school shop uses a genuine tech 2, and a Chinese candi module, haven't had any problems. For an auto competition I was in we had to use a program on a laptop, it was pretty slick... While other competitors were manually checking their cars systems, I pushed one button and it did its thing and would come back to me with whatever wasn't functioning properly, if a door was open or light bulb out it would say "open circuit". I can't remember the program name though and it was mostly for fords.
