My 09 is getting about 38 mpg currently, completely stock. (wife driven) My best tank is 45, mostly highway.
I too have looked at the malone tuning and dpf delete from PDE. The entire package; tune, exhaust, and downpipe (DPF delete) is $1850. That will get rid of everything emissions wise. Also, if you have a DSG trans, Malone recommends his tuning to help it live with the increased torque. Yet another $500. The dyno sheet I saw from a car that had all this done put down 170 hp and 334 ft/lbs.
$2350 gets you 37 whp and 110 ft/lbs, and said to be in the range of 4-8 mpg.
I haven't seen any conclusive evidence that people are getting large increases in mpg with these mods. Infact, Mark Malone said that in his testing removal of the EGR from TDI's actually hurts mpg (

I don't know about you guys, but I spend 1/4 of what these mods cost on fuel for the car in a year. I'm guessing the mileage increase might save you $100-$200 a year depending on miles driven.
From my point of view which doesn't amount to much. I bought this car because it was very economical, somewhat fun to drive, and it wasn't a fart sniffing hybrid. It's not fast, modding to the moon won't make it fast. I can't see spending that much to get so little in return. Believe me, I'm pro dpf-delete and keeping the internals as clean as possible by blocking the EGR. But until there are some cheaper options, I'm going to pass. If I keep the car long enough to have the DPF clog, then I'll revisit these mods.
