That's with the stock tune and it still smokes!

is that with no muffler only? or also no cat? if its both did it throw a code?

My moms (may she RIP) 2006 TDI smoked quite a bit when you stomped it. And she definately had a lead foot. Sad thing is dad has a leadfoot too, but averages 7mpg better than her. Must be a different of leadfoots. I get about 25mpgs when I drive it. Mom got 40mpg, dad gets 47ish

Straight piped, no cat or muffler(s) No codes

Biggest gain in whistle was from removing the cat, but that was also the hardest part...the cat IS the downpipe and the only downpipe available is close to $600 I think. So we just split the cat, gutted it, welded it back together and called it a day :D

Definitely not the best way to do it but 10k later, no problems. When we finally get an apartment with a garage up at school I will weld some bends up to replace the cat housing entirely.

malone tuning has a tune to let you remove the dpf and the egr without codes and it gives 170hp and 295 torque. my wifes 12 golf tdi is on order. this will be one of her first mods i do. i've been doing some research on the subject myself. there is another company that can do multiple tunes on a switch. but 170 seems to be about the top number. little more with the dpf gone and more mileage to boot.

another odd thing i found. most people who put on the "drivers gear" lower springs (vw drop springs made by eibach) yield another 2 mpg's. it only lowers it like almost 1" in front and .75" in the back. it gives a nice little rake stance and closes up the wheel well gaps. you can get the same springs from eibach and they are made to work with stock shocks/struts.

DPF delete & tune from Malone should be first on the list. We're getting a brand new Passat in the spring and I cant wait to void the warranty.

Just wondering believe me I'm no hippie or federal government emission loving individual as I think its all a crock of shit but you guys doing these mods do you have emission testing in your area?

Don't they inspect your vehicle for removed emission devices or is it strictly OBD checks and no sampling? I'm pretty sure here the look but not 100% sure.

They never use to check emissions on diesels here but they do now. For now I'm still exempt do to commercial reg but I know they do something with tractor trailers if DOT sees excessive smoke. Something there I could get stung in prolly but not sure. Just wondering about device removal.

No emissions for diesels in the state of PA. I've never had anyone look at my exhaust for inspection. Every car I ever owned would have been considered illegal.

I would invest in vagcom. Best thing i did for my 02

which vag com? i found a site and it was like $500. does that sound right? to help get the tune spot on mark @ malone tuning likes to have vag com data logs. is this the same thing? i was going to ask on the tdiclub forum but soon as you mention dpf they lock the thread.

nope, and the tuning they do does not make a lot of smoke if any at all. i figure the sooner i det rid of the egr the cleaner my intake tract will be. i'll keep my stock stuff so if my head light breaks (it has the type that turn with you) they wont blame the dpf delete. :roflmao:

yeah, the short trips my wife will be making to take kids to and from school will be hell on the dpf. so i told her i was going to take it off. i told her it was either take it off or let it clog and spend $3000 for a new one. so she agreed, lmao. plus she wants to be able to here the diesel and the turbo whistle. the turbo tahoe has her spoiled. :thumb:

I wanted to get an '00-03 ALH. My fiance was the one that suggested to check and see if a DPF delete was available on the new ones. :D I jumped for joy when I stumbled on the Malone page. What kind of mileage are you getting?

first mods are the 28mm solid adjustable sways front and rear, eibach sportline springs to just shorten the wheel gap, the dpf/egr delete and tune. there are a few other little things for handling i want to do but i don't want it to ride like a rock. but she likes her corners so i need to make sure it can handle it.

My 09 is getting about 38 mpg currently, completely stock. (wife driven) My best tank is 45, mostly highway.

I too have looked at the malone tuning and dpf delete from PDE. The entire package; tune, exhaust, and downpipe (DPF delete) is $1850. That will get rid of everything emissions wise. Also, if you have a DSG trans, Malone recommends his tuning to help it live with the increased torque. Yet another $500. The dyno sheet I saw from a car that had all this done put down 170 hp and 334 ft/lbs.

$2350 gets you 37 whp and 110 ft/lbs, and said to be in the range of 4-8 mpg. :( I haven't seen any conclusive evidence that people are getting large increases in mpg with these mods. Infact, Mark Malone said that in his testing removal of the EGR from TDI's actually hurts mpg (click here).

I don't know about you guys, but I spend 1/4 of what these mods cost on fuel for the car in a year. I'm guessing the mileage increase might save you $100-$200 a year depending on miles driven.

From my point of view which doesn't amount to much. I bought this car because it was very economical, somewhat fun to drive, and it wasn't a fart sniffing hybrid. It's not fast, modding to the moon won't make it fast. I can't see spending that much to get so little in return. Believe me, I'm pro dpf-delete and keeping the internals as clean as possible by blocking the EGR. But until there are some cheaper options, I'm going to pass. If I keep the car long enough to have the DPF clog, then I'll revisit these mods.

i agree its a bit much for so little. but the dpf would be another 1200 on top of that cost. plus hers is the 6spd stick with the dual final drives, so no DSG tune for me. she does not like auto's. i'm not in it to make it a race car. the dpf delete is more to remove extra shit to worry about later. the sways and springs are just little things to make it carve corners for when she wants to do some spirited driving. they are adjustable so for road trips i can put it on the softer setting so it will ride nice and smooth. we are getting this car more for mileage as well. she wants to finish her schooling and its like 45 mile drive one way.

i may wait until it does clog, it all depends on funds when it gets here. some people have had them go out pretty early some people not so much. technically i think its covered under the 100,000 miles federal emmissions law or some shit. lol

well, i may have him just do the "dynamic egr tune" then. but the dpf has to go. i'm also wondering if you can vent off the crank case pressure into a catch can instead of going into the intake, with out throwing a code.

ok, i called Peformance Diesel engineering. he said with egr deleted the guys loose about 3-5mpg. but with just the dpf delete and keeping the egr with the tune and full exhaust they see about a 5mpg gain. and part of the crud that builds up in the intake from egr is helped to stick there by the crank case ventilation. so it seems if one were to run the crank vent through a catch can and run a very small water/meth nozzle is should help keep the intake tract clean. along with helping egt's to stay low. if the egt's rise to fast it cuts back power and if the egt's get to high it cuts back power. so in running water/meth it should be able to ramp up power faster and make it longer than with out.
