I have an 03 lb7 the truck was bone stock when I purchased it last year and all modifications have been done by myself. The truck has 5'' diamond eye exhaust with a MBRP down pipe. I recently purchased a EFI live from duramax tuner with the tuning that is safe for a stock transmission. So far I am very happy with the tuning truck is very driveable and produces very little smoke. I am not on here asking how I can make my stock trans hold up to 500hp, I'm just wanting to get to most out of what I tranny is capable of. It defuels alot in the 80hp sport economy tune when you put the petal to the floor. I was thinking that this was due to the stock tuning in the TCM. My buddy has an LBZ with efi live and tcm tuning from danville (stock trans also) his truck really grabs gears each shift and holds fairly steady rpms while doing so. I know that he does have the 6 speed which is more desirable than my 5 speed, but I didn't know if it was feasible for my stock trans to shift similarly to his if i were to get a tcm tune, or should i try a relearn via my insight??
all positive ideas and thoughts are appreciated!

I'm no trans guru, and maybe Mike or some one else more knowledgable will chime in and add to this..

Most tuners control defuel through the ECM even though it can also be done through the TCM but I don't think a defuel issue is what you're describing. I believe mike advises to leave stock defueling as is. Now, TCM tuning should NOT have to be used to correct ECM issues in the tune. Of the handful of tuners tune I have been around (Kory, Rob, DT, DA, shorthorn to name a few) the only ones I could see benefiting from a TCM tune would be DT & Longhorn.. Essentially, it's not the TCM or trans fighting it, the ECM tune needs work. My truck shifts like stock as it should. As do robs tunes & diesel addictions. Now, with the new efi live update they have allowed the 5 speed TCM to be able to command & achieve lock up in 2nd gear without the need for a lock up box. For $200 if you're competitively using your truck (drag racing) this would be a benefit to you. For sled pulling I believe most still recommend a lock up box so you can force unlock the converter when the red flag is waved.

What I am getting at is, in my experience, and they do push this to aid their tuning, DT tunes do need TCM tuning to
Shift properly. More than 1 tuner has said that no TCM tuning is needed to help a truck shift properly IF the ECM tune is good. The only time(s) TCM tuning may be needed would be if you're running a MUCH larger than factory tire diameter, trying to daily drive a big single charger, or want to achieve lock up in 2nd without a box. Hope this helps!
