Helmet Discussion

Im in need of a new helmet. Can someone please clarify what rating/spec that NHRA requires now?

Also wondering where you guys have bought your helmets in the past. Im partial to an open-face helmet unless full-face is required.

Thanks for any info.

I haven't bought the new NHRA book yet, so I don't know for sure.

But if you are buying new, you want a Snell M2010 open face at a minimum.

HRC makes cheap M2010 helmets.

I'd go for a full face Snell SA2010. This is legal for pretty much any kind of racing.

Found this on the internet for NHRA 2011:

HELMET
For all 10.00 to 13.99 closed-bodied cars, either an open-face or a full-face Snell M2000, M2005, M2010, K2005, SA2000, SA2005,
SFI 31.1A, 31.1/2005, 31.2A, 41.1A, 41.1/2005, or 41.2A helmet with or without a shield is mandatory.

For all 10.00 and slower dune-buggy-type vehicles and all 10.00 to 13.99 open-bodied front-engine or rear-engine supercharged,
turbocharged, nitrous, or naturally aspirated cars, a full-face Snell M2000, M2005, M2010, K2005, SA2000, SA2005, SFI 31.2A, or
41.2A helmet and shield mandatory (goggles prohibited).

For all 9.99 and quicker closed-bodied cars, a full-face Snell M2000, M2005, M2010, K2005, SA2000, SA2005, SFI 31.2A, or 41.2A
helmet mandatory; shield permitted (goggles prohibited).

For all 9.99 and quicker open-bodied front-engine or rear-engine supercharged, turbocharged, or nitrous cars, a full-face Snell
SA2000, SA2005, or SFI 31.2A helmet and shield mandatory (goggles prohibited).

For all 9.99 or quicker open-bodied front-engine or rear-engine naturally aspirated cars, a full-face Snell M2000, M2005, M2010,
K2005, SA2000, SA2005, SFI 31.2A, or 41.2A helmet and shield mandatory (goggles prohibited). See General Regulations 10:7.

This makes me wonder if for a turbocharged truck, all ET's require a full-face due to the turbo. I don't think so, but I'd play it safe.

Pyrotect makes some awesome helmets that are fairly inexpensive. In my opinion I would get a SA2010. The M rated helmets are made for motorcycle use. They are not fire resistant and they have not been tested with rollbar impact

The way I read it, for slower than 10 sec. you wouldn't need a full face unless you decided to ditch the windshield & hood.

Yes, that's the way I read it too.

Now, will all techs read it that way?

There is a debate at some tracks if you need a firejacket with a Dmax since it's turbo. The tech is "wrong" when they say you need one, but the tech is never wrong.

I could see an potential argument if you were running something other than a stock turbo depending on how much of a rule nazi your dealing with.
I think you have to wear a jacket with compounds though

Im getting ready to get a new helmet myself and I plan to get an open face. Although the full face offer more protection a full face is agrivating to put on and take off while sitting in the truck.

I went to a track and that was the biggest concern. They never even looked at the helmet!

Odd.... but they did happen to sell fire jackets at double the price in the consession stand.

Tom, I have a cheap 50 dollar open face that I bought from the local Harley shop. I look like a moron wearing it, but its always passes tech. I'll go see what kind it is. One more thing, make sure you wear long pants or bring some sweats/track pants to put on if you wear shorts. I was denied at National Trails last year for not having them. They wanted 40 bucks for a pair in the gift shop. I watched that day.
