So my 03 is going to get transynd, it is currently a dex 3 fluid in it. Basically what i want to make sure or ask is if i was wanting to drop the pan to look for chunks  would you do this first, then fill with transynd and drive what i have heard is 500 miles, then drain again and change spin on and refill. does it sound like i have the right idea???

Any info is appreciated thanks

DONT DO IT! YOUR TRANS WILL LIMP ASAP!!!

:spit: but seriously, do the hoot method/flush if your that concerned about getting all the dex 3 out. The whole system hold 22-24qts if you have a shallow pan. Mixing in transyn wont hurt it with it mixed with dex 3. your only gunna get 6-8 quarts out of the pan drain. No need to change the internal filter either, just the spin on.

Thats all I did, The PO never changed the spin on in 75k miles of towing so I figured I would change the internal. Refilled then drove for a couple hundred miles then drained and refilled with transynd and so far so good atleast.

Whats broke? If it needs to be repaired don't waste the money on the fluid. Are you still worried about the reverse bump? If it aint doing anything I wouldn't worry about it.

I also recommend the flush. It's easy to do and you get 100% fresh fluid.

maybe not sure. i have heard the "hoot" is not reccomended by the allison fluid engineer on D.F, he reccomends the double drain. thanks anyway

as long as you dont let the pan go dry, you will be just fine. its worked fine on the last three trucks ive done it on and twice on my truck

Its been roughly 80K miles since the thread I linked above... my transmission has worked flawlessly.

BigDipper, who guided me through the process, is a highly respected person with these transmissions, and trucks for that matter.

To quote another esteemed member of our community "but what do I know?".

this is direct from DF.

We did some testing years ago with some "doped up" TranSynd. We put 500 ppm (parts per million) manganese in it as a "tracer" so we could tell how much fresh fluid got into the system. We used a flushing machine and also a standard drain and refill. The data showed we got about the same results using either method (it's been many years ago now but I'm thinking it was around 60% or so. That's why we recommend a double drain and refill now; so, you up the TranSYnd content.

Also, flushing is messy and can hurt the transmission pump if you're not careful and starve the pump.

Bottom Line: It's possible to do a flush but you must be careful not to starve the pump because it will keep on sucking fluid (or air if you can't continue to feed it as it pumps). You'll need to disconnect the "From Cooler" hose (as it's marked on the transmission case). This hose contains the fluid coming back to the transmission from the cooler. Put the hose in a bucket. Then, ensure you're constantly feeding new fluid into the fill tube while you idle the engine. This will send the fresh fluid through the transmission, torque converter, cooling lines and cooler. Once the fluid turns bright red in the bucket, you're good to go.

PS: I don't recommend this method because I'm afraid of starving the pump and causing damage.

so again, if you dont run the pan dry you will have no issues. i can understand his side, if you get one of those special guys on DF that do a flush by letting the pan go dry each time, then have him come back bitchin about how his trans is shit now. Eitherway you do it should net you what your looking for. one just takes more driving than the other. i get the "warm fuzzy" feeling when i flush it as i feel its getting more of the fresh fuild in it that way than draining and refilling. I have no proof to back that though but in theory you would think it would work that way

Soooo, whats the reasoning for changing out to Transynd? Not worth it on a stock trans IMO.

Also FWIW, Allison only recommends changing the pan filter during an overhaul. UNLESS you find stuff in the pan then I would change it, but its not going to fix it...
