Swapping pinion yokes

Just swapped a used rearend into a truck with a bad rear end, just swapped complete units to keep things simple (i though).

However It skipped my brain that AL and Steel driveshafts have different u-joints I guess, and I either need to swap the pinion yokes or get a different driveshaft made.

So what do i need for parts, and what do I need to pay attention too.

Thanks.

Thats what im asking. What do I need to do for it. If its simply pop the old one off and put it onto the new/used one, then perfect. But im sure it is not.

Reading through the manual its looking like Ill need a new nut, new crush sleeve/washer thing, and such. So that means waiting for parts.

I also am curious is I need to deal with setting the pinion depth and such, or if It can just be swapped on. If I have to go into setting the depth of the pinion and such, thats more time and labor.

This is not my truck, so this person does have to pay me for my time. If it will be over $200 with parts and labor to do this, i can get a driveshaft made cheaper. Might not even be the worst Idea because I feel he will ruin the stock one before long anyways. Time is also of the essence, he needs the truck back ASAP. Im sure Ill be stuck waiting for the pinion nut and other parts from a dealer whereas I can go downtown and have a driveshaft made within a couple hours.

Rearends are the one area I dont really know much about and tend to worry me for some reason.

thanks

There is conversion ujoints made by spicer. Any truck dliveline shop should carry these ujoints

just mark the nut to the pinion threads so it goes back in pretty much the same place, and just swap it from the other rear. i've done this several times its no big deal just mark the nut before you remove it

Local shop says spicer doesn't make one to adapt 1480 to 1410 yet.

so as far as swapping yokes I'm sure I need to check the thickness of each.

But your saying I won't need a new nut or crush sleeve, or need to reset the pinion preload

I've swapped yokes before without replacing the nut or crush sleeves. It might not be the right way but it is doable as long as you are careful. When you swap yokes don't go ape sh!t with the impact and you should be ok. When I do them I use the impact to take the nut off but put them back on by hand.

Take the ujoint or driveshhaft you are going to use and then remove the yoke, and take it with you. Did you use a axle from a lmm truck and use it in a obs truck?
