Swapping A50 TCM for an A40 TCM?

I have a 2014 Silverado 3500HD that's been sitting in the shop since August because the T14 A50 tcm failed. Of course, these A50's are on backorder and are impossible to get without spending +4k. I have been told that you can actually swap it for a T14A A40 TCM from the 2006-2008 LMM's as long as it is programmed correctly. Well unlike the A50, you can get the A40 on GM's website for around $300. So theoretically, could I buy a new A40, get it programmed for a 2007-2008 duramax 3500HD, and install it in my 2014 3500 with no issues?

Sorry, I don't know how to answer your question about the programing.

I haven't seen any new A40's for a while. If you can even get a new one at that price I would scoop it up. Used ones are fetching between 800-1000 and as much as 2500 from what I have seen...

My last conversation with the parts guy at the dealer was that you basically get put on a wait list and as they come in GM fills the back order. He had one one come in for a truck that was down at another shop for almost a year.... The shop forgot about the repair and said they didnt want it. He happened to know who the customer was so he called the customer direct to let him know it arrived and he drove down to scoop it up. My guy knows as soon as they show up as available in the system, Other dealers will try and get it from them.

I am waiting for an LBZ Glow plug module. When I ordered one there was already some on that was on his list that was almost a year old in the system for one. I am like 3rd - 4th in line to get one.

You can do the swap if you have an LMM with an A50, but I don't think it will work on the LML because the 2007-2008 TCM doesn't have programming to control pressure like the LML TCM.

Doesn’t matter about the A40. Those are on back order as well. One site said maybe available in October 2023. I want to get one as well. I’m sure someone here knows, but I don't know why these are all on backorder.

GM has been releasing stock as they get it now. I believe they had changed suppliers and that took some time.

Well Jason, willing to crack one of these open and see if they can be repaired? You already worked one miracle, why not try for two?

With what kind of warranty and for how much? I was hoping for one of the New, not remanufactured ones with lifetime warranty and under $1,000. Ryan’s Diesel and Pure Diesel were selling them.

I've been thinking about that ground terminal that burns out if a jumper touches the case. I think that should be repairable. Is there other common failure modes for them?

Still no idea about price though?
No, haven't ordered one in awhile. You can go punch the PN into say RockAuto, GM Parts Direct, or other GM parts sales websites and see what they list it at.

I can look later tonight when I get some free time if you haven't gotten an answer by then.

Thanks man. I checked Rock Auto, but says out of stock and doesn’t show a price. GM Parts Direct didn’t pull anything up for TCM.

So it looks like you have a few options:

1) ATS T87A conversion kit: $2950, shipping end of June
2) New GM TCM: $710.78+$50 core, no lead time available as they are on backorder per them. They have ~30 on order.

FYI... GM is now shipping new TCM's per a few posts at DuramaxForum.com from members who have had them on backorder since early 2022...
