Surfaced heads

Took heads to a machine shop and had surfaced and valves grind they can't tell me how much they took off or how deep they set the valves how can I go about checking this before I put the heads on don't want valves to hit piston.

C gaskets and playdough. You should be fine but use a different machine shop next time

I suggest you take them to another machine shop and have them check to see if the decking was done level and if the valves were done correctly. The fact they can't even give you a number on the amount they took off tells me that you should trust nothing about the work done to the heads.

They'd be paying for a new set of heads if they were mine. If they can't tell you how much they took off the surface or valves who knows what else the f'ed up. They'd either be buying a new set or sending them to someone who knows what they're doing to check everything over on their dime.

That's what I'm doing tomorrow taking to another shop and let them check and see what they did

Here's a link you can read how the valve clearance is checked from Reher Morrison. This is how I check the clearance in the BBC pulling truck engines I built.
