At the very least have a spare block on hand. Maybe a crank too. Almost everything else expensive (heads, cam, etc) can be salvaged off a motor thats been blown up.

Reason I say block is because 95% of the time a piston cracks it scores the block to the point of it needing to be bored. Not saying you cant bore your [scored] block out, but then it forces you to buy all new pistons which can be a huge expense when used cut/delipped pistons work fine. Not like you are going to find used good condition .020 over pistons.

I have like 350 dollars into my pistons. 250 for a set of 8 used good ones and 100 at the machine shop to have them cut/delipped. 350 dollars would barely buy you 3 new .020 over unmachined pistons.

I reused my original LLY crank (had it balanced, keyed, polished and magnetic particle inspected though), cam (had it keyed), and heads (cleaned them up with a can of brake parts cleaner and a razor blade knife). The block is a 2001 LB7 with 300k miles on it.

yeah so do I.

I walked and/or bike rode for 2 months. Sucks.

and stole my truck...cough:cough:

saved me a bunch on my fuel bill though not having a truck for two months :D

as far as my build...I bought a block ready for assembly with headstuds, main studs, two cranks (one that was brand new), front and rear covers, socal valve springs, 8 new pistons (all left ones though:rolleyes:), upper and lower oil pans, brand new LBZ valve covers/ intake manifolds, and tons of misc. parts for $2000.00...so I was already ahead of the game as far as a spare block. All in I think I will be around $5K as long as I (and ben) do all the labor.

you're on your own bub, Ive had enough engine building for this lifetime. :p

Ill get you your pistons and a copy of my service manual and you can have at it. :D

so add another $10k since my engine will probably destroy itself if I tackle the build alone :D

After pulling apart our donor motor for our puller, I'm more concerned with the cam and crank pins. Both had noticeable wear. Key them both in any build IMO.
