Okay maybe it's not stupid. But I know imma get bashed for it but I'd really like to know so... here goes. I know I've mentioned this in a few other posts but I've always liked the look of and the supposed ease of power of the 6.4 powerstroke. So right now I'm in a delima. If I sell my truck I could be 100% out of debt and since I'll be getting married early next year, that would be great. Now of course I would want another truck. Love my duramax but Id wanna try something new. I understand the issues of the 6.4. But at the same time I understand a few people have pushed a stock bottom end into the 4 digits. But I do not want to downgrade performance wise. So I guess now to the question lol. Plans for my truck are nothing more than an s475 kit if I keep it. Makes for a fast truck. It's quick already. Would a 6.4 with the same mods and a good tune be as quick or faster than mine would be (i.e. S475, built trans, and injectors maybe 60% overs)?

Do you own a home? If not, and youre getting married (congrats!), then that would be the next logical purchase. Then its time to start saving.....

I say keep what you have and the plans you have for it. It'll be faster than a deleted 6.4.

I've had a 6.4 fun truck with just tunes/exhaust/cai, but they get expensive to fix real quick.

I currently rent but That's part of why I am considering selling. I could sell and have almost no bills. Save my money for a while and just drive the old 6.2 for a while because she has a brand new civic. And my rent is cheap and she loves my place but I'd really like to be out of an apartment lol she knows I need a truck to keep me sane and if done with it being a toy as long as I don't have to work insane overtime. So I'm just wondering what the 6.4 will do with the same mods that I already have. With the addition of the 475. Cause if it's gonna be slower I'll just keep what I have lol

Oh. And thank you!!

Well at this point the next thing that can go is my bottom end cause I'm at 265k. So if that's not something I have to worry about with a 6.4 at the same power level, then that's a bonus yanno?

If you're free and clear on your current truck, keep it. Make other changes to your lifestyle in order to pay your bills down. ;)

Most of us have had to do something similar at one time or another in our lives. :)

Just wait til you have kids! You dont know the meaning of the word "debt" yet.

Not free and clear... but if I did sell it I could pay it and 2 other little things I have on me off. That's why it's so appealing but at the same time I'm so close to having this truck complete and done. If I get another truck I'd have to just pay that much back into it to get a built trans etc. and hopefully no kids. We don't want kids. At least not for a while.

I know somebody who works for a local Ford truck shop, and all he does is 6.4l engines. He said he averages almost 3 6.4l engines a week, he does so many there parts department kept 2 short block's in stock. That right there scared me away from the 6.4l. Granted it is a truck only dealer that does mostly fleet trucks that get beat on, but that's alot of engines for 1 guy, and he's not the only 6.4l guy there. He remarked to me one time, who would have thought the 6.0l with a little work would end up being more reliable(he drives a 6.0l).

Exactly how I feel. I don't do that many but I have done a lot. I wouldn't own a 6.4. But I have owned a couple 6.0s. Even if you did get lucky and find a super low mileage one that had the oil changed every 3-4k miles and was deleted right off the bat and not beat on, the Siemens high pressure fuel system is still marginal at best. Changing that pump is no pleasant process.

I really appreciate all the great replies guys. Thought for sure I'd get bashed. It's pretty wild to me that these trucks can hold that much power in stock form (bottom end) and still have that many issues. I just love the way they look inside and out. Found an 08 with 76k miles. Also didn't know Siemens was the maker of the fuel system. As an electrician, all my company uses is Siemens stuff because we get a deal on it and I HATE it. So freakin cheaply made.

Honestly, from someone who's been there and had a lot of cars... It's never cheaper to get into another one. Especially another diesel truck with unknown history. Ya know?

You know what you've got now, the Ford could be a nightmare or it might be perfect (not likely perfect given it's a few years old). Plus, I'm sure half the reason your chica likes you is cuz the Chevy ;).

Basically you're trading a known budget and cool truck for a a hopeful savings and good end result. But the chances are just as good you won't save a dime IMO. I do hear you though, not on the Ford part but on the being young part nearly married and looking at a bill too many haha

When I first started looking at diesels I wanted a 6.0 or 6.4 bad. They were in my price range and do look really nice inside and out. I started doing research and quickly realized why such nice trucks were in my price range. It was just too much of a gamble for me.

if your truly worried about debt sell your truck and drive your 6.2
Do not buy a ford anything unless you have and endless budget
They break to much and dang near everything is ford only parts with big $$ tag

Thanks guys. Selling and driving the 6.2 may be in my future. I know I'll want something else eventually and I'll be pissed off that I'm starting off fresh again lol but who knows what'll work out. Maybe I'll luck up and it'll get totaled and I can do a duramax k10 3/4 hybrid monster lol I kinda decided against the 6.4 already given that I was seeing 600+ whp trucks only in low 13s and high 12s. I dare say my truck is already there with less power.

maybe i missed it but could you explain how selling your truck and buying the 6.4 then adding those mods will keep you out of debt? sounds to me you would just go right back into it.

and i would NOT want a 6.4. i have seen way too many going in stock or modded with blown HG, shot pistons, horrible blow by, and everything listed by those above this post. that engine is not anything like the ford boys thought it was years ago. if you want a 1000hp on a stock block, the cummins is the best one to start with and even then, its a toss up if the engine stays together getting to that point or lasting. there are 3-4 stock 1000hp cummins here in az track proven and they have been unreliable to say the least.

Yes I would have been going back into debt at some point but not for a while. And I would have one payment instead of 3+ like right now. Would have deleted and tuned and called it done till I had the cash saved up. But the 6.4 is off the books now. If I decide to keep the duramax I'll lock down on finances and get crap paid so I can get a house. Then s475 and see if I can spray into the 10s

Too many times I have seen people make poor decisions financially in order to satisfy the need for change in my career. And we all know the urge to mod these trucks is a hard itch to satisfy, and a new one doesn't make that any easier. If you are going to sell the truck to get rid of some debt, don't turn around a pick up some more.

no truck payments is the best mod you can make:thumb:

I fully agree. But then again it's difficult to make a trip to myrtle beach to see my fiancé in an 82 6.2 diesel with no overdrive. Lol
