Neighbor had a small tree come down, and their hurting on money so I kinda offered to attempt to pull out stump. (I had cut up the tree for them)

Tree is maybe 10inchs in diameter at the bottom, wasn't that tall, so not sure how big the root system is. But, before I break my truck or make a fool of myself, any suggestions? Don't even bother? 4lo and gun it?

I always cut them as low as you can. Then drill a bunch of 1" holes about 12-24" deep need a good drill. Fill holes with gas for 3 days ( top up each day ) then burn it down.

If you know what kind of tree that may help.

Dig around the bottom about 1 foot deep, and then see if you can get under it with a shovel. I have a trenching shovel from home depot that is great for digging around trees. its narrow and extra thick. I tend to use it to cut tap roots on smaller trees also.

Once you get enough dirt from around it, use a strap (not chain) and just put pressure on it. Get out, and try shoveling around under it again. then pull some more.

4lo and gun it usually comes just before something gets broke. Pulled a tree over at my parents. 4lo and pressure, till it started falling, then it was gun it to get out of the way of it falling. :happy2:

Live tree, and the plan was to use the truck to slowly pull the root up working around it with a chainsaw.

And this is NJ here, can't burn anything

I pulled two out of my front yard probably about that size. The first one went fine but we left it a little bit taller for leverage. The second one was lower to the ground and when we got it leaned over we had to cut some of the roots on the back side to pull it the rest of the way. You can definitely attempt it without breaking your truck. Just go slow and see how it goes, if it doesn't work don't go crazy with it and you won't be a fool. These were cedar trees and their roots systems were pretty well established.

Pulled a pecan tree stump up for my parents. Dig out as much around it as possible. Get under one big root and use that to put the strap around. Four low and let off the brakes. Let the truck weight tighten it up and add slow pressure. Make sure to use a spotter. It will come up. Good luck. As long as your not jerking on it you shouldn't break nothing.
