Hi, I have seen this discussed in this and other sites forums but no answers that I could find that addressed the issue. As far as I can tell a lot of guys are having this issue and dealers are not much help on it.

I have had 4 duramax diesel trucks starting in 2001 when the first ones came out. The one I have now is the only one that puts out this strong diesel exhaust fume smell that fills the cab when idling and backing up. I have resorted to putting on recirc each and everytime I start it and when coming to a stop at a light etc. It did it right from new but it does seem worse now that its got about 60 k miles on it. I have since put on 4" exhaust, intake and MBRP down pipe, cat is gone and EGR is blocked. There are no exhaust leaks ! It stinks even after turning it off as you walk away from it the smell lingers. It is simply making this "extra" heavy exhaust and being it is so strong it finds its way into the cab and you really notice it. Its not ventilation system as you can smell it outside too. If I let it warm up outside the smell even gets into the garage with the door closed. It seems to come and go somewhat and I noticed this on another site where a guy said it seems to come up every few days or so. The dealer kept it for 10 days once and fooled around with EGR and did not make any difference, then a few months later I got a code so they replaced EGR at my expense and that did nothing to fix problem.

I think it may be some injector issue ? Is it possible one or two injectors are doing something weird and if so is there a replacement or upgrade to improve the injector performance perhaps ? Anyone have any ideas I'm desperate to get to the bottom of this. Truck is an 07 Classic LBZ. :help:

Injector(s) returning to much fuel, sort of like running rich. Makes your exhaust stink up real strong. When my 06lly had a few bad injectors it would slightly haze at idle and smell really strong!

It is exhaust fumes - real stinking strong diesel exhaust fumes, enough to give you a headache real quick. Even after driving up and turning it off when you get out you smell it right away. Its not a fuel smell its exhaust fumes - just like you got your head right up the exhaust pipe.

If there is some bad injectors can the dealer test them or how do I go about getting them looked at to see if they are working right and if not do they get replaced or is there an adjustment ??

You say its exhaust fumes but you are looking at the injectors? its either 1 or the other 1 is before combustion and the other is after big differance. If it is indeed exhaust you may have a bad uppipe belows that only shows up under load when drive presure raises or possibly a bad gasket At the manifold. If its diesel fuel fumes could be alot of things you will need to check areound the fuel filter area and make sure you have no leaks there.then just follow the fuel lines and look for something wet.

Hi, The exhaust odor is not noticed under load but that is because im driving and leaving the stink behind along the road somewhere. It is only when sitting and idling such as first start up in morning while warming it up or when stoped at a light for instance that the stink creeps inot the cab. I hit the recirc air whenever I stop to try keeping it out. Its definelty not raw fuel smell. I think its all coming out of the tail pipe since when you back up you really get a dose of it unless i have all windows up and recirc on. Its just regular diesel exhaust multiplied by about 10.

I have the same motor as you and I have exhaust fumes coming in my H1 only when the ac is on... I have no exhaust leaks and cant drive in FL with no ac. Anyone have any ideas?
